Rhinestones And Raging At The Semi Precious Weapons/Lady Gaga Afterparty

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, July 9th, 2010 5:15 pm

Following the sold-out Lady Gaga show at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, the VIP crowd reconvened at Good Units for a very outre afterparty. The night kicked off with a performance by Prudence, who endeared himself to the crowd with unpretentious jams and cute, owlish glasses. At about 1 AM, Semi Precious Weapons took the stage, much to the high-pitched delight of their fans (many of whom were sporting paper masks of the lead singer, Justin Tranter’s, face). DJ Lady Starlight spun between sets, making sure that the throngs of people sporting glitter and studs were moving until well into the evening. As the night wound down, one thing was clear: You can definitely rely on Semi Precious Weapons to provide a spectacle that’s just as much about cool, bizarre fashion statements as it is about music.

beach fossils boyz Last night, D+T and StyleCaster kicked off the StyleCaster Summer Concert Series at Santos Party House with a performance by Beach Fossils, in addition to DJ sets by Mick Boogie and VDRK. 42Below provided scores of free drinks to the well-dressed masses, which probably helped to fuel the moshing and crowdsurfing that accompanied Beach Fossils’ catchy, head-nodding set. Camera Obscura To Play Obscure Show at Brooklyn Flea

Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, May 27th, 2010 11:30 am

When researching for a book I wrote last year, I made it a point to go to every Flea Market around New York City. Hands down, Brooklyn Flea is my favorite. It’s got all the charm and panache of Hell’s Kitchen, but it’s closer to my house and they sell McClures pickles, and have amazing Asian hot dogs. But now, it looks like I’m gonna have to make my way back because Camera Obscura will be playing a free 2pm show on Sunday, June 6th. If you don’t have the $30 for their Grand Ballroom show the next night, you might want to make your way over to the Flea. MORE »

Artist Showcase to Raise Funds for L.E.A.D. Uganda

Shannon Hassett :: Monday, May 10th, 2010 11:00 am

Third City, New York, an organization that teams nonprofits, entertainment outlets, and corporations for philanthropic initiatives (and here you thought oil and water never mixed), is holding an artist showcase at Gallery Bar on May 19 at 7pm to raise money for L.E.A.D. Uganda. L.E.A.D. — founded by award winning photographer Stephen Shames — works to raise money for abandoned children in the country affected by AIDS, war and poverty. The showcase will feature work by Shyvonne, Moruf and Lions, Tigers and Bears, as well as a DJ set by All-En1. Third City continues its mission to teach Yuppies that giving some of that money to good causes does actually make them better people, and what finer way than art to disguise such philanthropy as intellectual consumerism? Head to Gallery Bar (120 Orchard St., NYC 10002) a week from this Wednesday for a great cause, great art, and of course, great cocktails. MORE »

NYU’s 25th Annual Strawberry Festival

Shannon Hassett :: Friday, April 30th, 2010 8:30 am

Oh, the strawberry. That luscious, sugary, red seeded wonder; how I love thee so. And now I can celebrate your fruity existence with my favorite bands and New York City’s longest strawberry shortcake (which I guess is more of a funeral march). The Strawberry Festival is an NYU tradition now in its 25th year, and while the free food (think carnival: popcorn, snow cones, etc.) and free giveaways (think college: frisbees, sunglasses, carabiners, etc.) may require some sneaking in without an NYU ID, the music is free for public enjoyment. And you will enjoy it, because the lineup this year is awesome. Hop Along, Little Lungs, Screaming Females, Fiasco and Jeff the Brotherhood are all set to take the stage (things kick off at noon), so head out to LaGuardia Place (between W 3rd and W 4th Streets) and support some great local bands and lest you forget, god’s gift to fruit.

Adam Green to Debut Art, Perform in NYC

Gray Hurlburt :: Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 5:00 pm

Later this month, Adam Green, New York City’s once moldy peach and folk-rock son, will debut a collection of paintings on April 22nd at the Morrison Hotel Gallery Bowery (formerly CBGB’s). The show, called Teen Tech, will coincide with the end of a tour in support of his recent solo album, Minor Love, of which we have a whole lotta love for.
Green’s paintings, orange and lime green, feature that childish sense of fun that’s diluted in many of us, with Felix the Cat, pepperoni pizzas, and other wacky things lighting up his canvasses with crayon-esque flare. Sure, maybe I should treat his work with a different sentiment, considering he spent over a year on the collection and that all proceeds from sales will go to help the Haiti relief effort, but Green’s ho-hum lyrics put me in a blissful myopia. According to him,  ”The pieces in Teen Tech are caricatures of cartoons, which I feel distill the subjects down to their bare essence.”
Teen Tech is on April 22nd, and those of you in New York can catch him on the 23rd and 24th at the Bowery Ballroom.
Adam Green tour dates:
APR. 13         DENVER, CO                     LARIMER LOUNGE
APR. 14         KANSAS CITY, MO             RECORD BAR
APR. 15         CHICAGO, IL                     SCHUBAS
APR. 16         CLEVELAND, OH                GROG SHOP (early show)
APR. 17         TORONTO, ONT                 MOD CLUB
APR. 19         MONTREAL, QUE               PETIT CAMPUS
APR. 20         BOSTON, MA                     GREAT SCOTT
APR. 21         PHILADELPHIA, PA             JOHNNY BRENDA’S
APR. 23         NEW YORK, NY                  BOWERY BALLROOM
APR. 24         NEW YORK, NY                  BOWERY BALLROOM

It’s Greek Independence Day!

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, March 25th, 2010 2:35 pm

First, let me say: Yes, I’m Greek American, and I’m proud to say that. No, I don’t want to talk about My Big Fat Greek Wedding; I’m not dark-skinned and don’t have dark curly hair; I do love the soothing, trotting sounds of the bouzouki; I was baptized in olive oil by the Greek Orthodox church; and I don’t riot at the drop of a hat.
Today is the day when Greeks around the world celebrate their victory over the Ottoman Empire in 1821 after four centuries of occupation and oppression. It’s hard not to get a little sad when I think about all of the tragedy that has marred Greece’s history over the last century and a half, but it’s a day to celebrate, so let’s break out the ouzo. Brooklyn Flea Won’t Be Returning to DUMBO

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 3:10 pm

The Brooklyn Flea, home to myriad delicious treats and fun bargains to sift through, is returning to its original location in Fort Greene on Saturdays and will continue to operate at the Williamsburg Savings Bank on Sundays.  Apparently, constant construction work on Water St. has caused a number of headaches for the Flea, and so they’ve decided not to return.  In a statement, a representative said the following:

“While we are really sorry not to be in Dumbo, where we have received so much support from officials at the Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Dumbo BID, we are also excited to consider our residency at the architecturally-stunning place where we’ve spent the winter.  It’ll also be nice not to be so weather-dependent!”

Yeah, yeah, it must be easy to be so chipper about it when you’re not a resident of nearby Brooklyn Heights, like me.  Oh, well.

Bushwick Music Festival (March 24-27)

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 5:30 pm

Sure, SXSW was probably tons of fun with it’s all night parties and shows everywhere all the time, but Brooklyn is gearing up for its own inebriated celebration of music: Bushwick Music Festival. In association with Arts In Bushwick, Deli Magazine and Bushwick Music Studios the DIY festival is a four day romp from March 24-27. It all came together when the Bushwick Music Studios crew decided to unify all the best loft and warehouse spaces, as well as the most talented musicians, DJs and performance artists in the area. Most of the shows are really cheap, and are going down all over Bushwick. Get the full schedule after the jump. MORE »

The SXSW Diaries 2010

Drew Fortune :: Monday, March 22nd, 2010 6:41 pm

SXSW 2010. My first rodeo. My inaugural trip to Austin and SXSW was a bit like my first sexual experience: I didn’t know where I was half the time, there were a lot of events I wish I had been granted access, and it was completely overwhelming. I was reduced from jaded cynic to wide-eyed naïf the moment I set foot on downtown Austin’s Sixth Street, the hub and throughway of SXSW. It’s a bit like Mardi Gras for indie rock, with roving gangs of hipsters, hippies, tweakers, journalists and nonplussed locals pouring in and out of bars. Loud garage rock provides a constant buzzing, background score. MORE »

Tribeca Film Festival Annouces Full 2010 Line Up

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 3:25 pm

Yesterday the Tribeca Film Festival, an annual showing of top independent full length and short films, announced their full 2010 line up. Showcasing 85 feature-length films and 45 short films, the festival will kick off April 21st and will be showing films all the way until May 2. Among some of the highly anticipated films to be shown will be Ondine by Neil Jordan which features Collin Farrell as a fisherman who catches the ultimate angler’s prize: a mermaid. Yes, there will be a plentiful amount of gripping and enthralling movies like Alex Gibney’s untitled documentary on ex-governor Eliot Spitzer, but this year the TFF is adding an interesting twist: Internet viewing.
