Further Proof That White Girls Can’t Dance
Amy Laviero :: Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 12:15 pm
If you live in New York you’re well aware of today’s cold, gloomy conditions, and if you don’t live in New York, well, everyone needs a reason to laugh, right? My gift to you is the video below. This is not just any video. This video is of Miley Cyrus. Lap dancing (poorly, might I add). Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that cute teen from Hannah Montana, the one your little sister idolizes, she is growing up and sporting unflattering short-shorts while having her ass viciously humped by some shifty dude. Miley Cyrus has officially boarded a one-way train to Britney Spears-dom. Only time will tell how long until she gets a plethora of bad tattoos, shaves her head, and goes braless 99.9% of the time. Click through to watch the video. In it, Cyrus is seen dancing with the aforementioned shifty guy, and a 44 year old gay man, whom I can only assume is now gayer. MORE »

Caribou: Live At The Music Hall of Williamsburg 5/7
Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 2:30 pm
Some people think that you can judge the quality of show by the people attending, like how you can judge a book by its cover. Just as the latter statement is false, so is the former. When I arrived at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, an eccentric array of people were outside smoking between sets. This, and Caribou’s drastic musical metamorphosis had me excited and curious as to what the show would look and sound like. Would it just be Dan Snaith up there with a computer and some electronic gadgets or would they perform as a full band? After I decided not to hold any preconceived notions about what I was about to see, I entered the venue just minutes before Caribou took the stage. MORE »

Tiki Barber Has Abandonment Issues
Matt Kiebus :: Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 3:00 pm
Tiki Barber cares deeply about his public image. It took Barber many years to carefully craft his persona as an intelligent, likable, charming, and respectful athlete. The NBC broadcaster apparently forgot the cardinal rule about being a nice guy. You never leave your wife of 11 years for a 23-year-old former NBC intern. It makes you look bad, especially if your wife is 8-months preggers with twins. MORE »

Fuck “Old New York,” Unless You’re Edith Wharton, And Be Happy That There’s Only One Homeless Person Left In Times Square
Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 4:05 pm
As a New York City college student, I often find myself involved in a really infuriating conversation that I’m sure many others are familiar with. My biggest pet peeve in the world is when 21-year-olds bemoan the loss of some mythical “old New York,” which usually involves the usage of the terms “gentrification,” “crust punk,” “sanitized,” and “Washington Square Park.” The best part is the people who spew these ill-informed diatribes are never, ever native New Yorkers - although they’ll be quick to tell you that their fathers worked here when they were growing up, or that they were born in a hospital in the Bronx, or that they’re from Long Island, which totally counts (it doesn’t, as if it mattered). They’re just elitist dicks who’ve watched Kids one too many times and think that by glorifying the perceived grittiness of rape, disease, violence, and class struggles, they’re somehow attuned to something more authentic than the safer city that they live in today. What To Do If You’re Not Going To SXSW
Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 1:20 pm
If you’re one of the unlucky people, like me, who has to hear about your friends/co-workers SXSW plans, you’re probably brewing with envy at the idea of drinking all day in the hot Austin sun, seeing amazing bands everyday all day/night and being apart of the indie music scene’s annual vacation. Lament no longer. Even though, it seems that every good band out there is Austin bound there are still some amazing shows going on, and you can live you’re own SXSW by starting your weekend bender off with St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow and continuing the bacchanal celebration of music into the weekend by getting out to all the great shows going on in your city. Finding Your Fortress of Solitude
Johnny Sanford :: Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 11:45 am
Last week, New York City was blanketed with the most snow we’ve seen in years, and New Yorkers got the chance to take a day to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in their bathrobes while watching the snow hit the proverbial fan. We were encased in a momentary Fortress of Solitude, and I took the time to think about where to find peace in this otherwise hectic town. MORE »

Classic Movie Theaters: The Refurbished and Forgotten
Matt Kiebus :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 3:45 pm
Movie theaters have been an escape for generations of people, a place to forget about outstanding electric bills and minimum wage paychecks. There is something magical about seeing films at movie theaters, the arresting combination of moving pictures and music merge to create portal into a different world. During the 1920s and 30s massive theaters were built across the country, designed in Art Deco style and finished with flair. These theaters were most prominent throughout golden age of film, when men wore jackets and ties and women dresses to the movies. Over time these grand cinemas have fallen into disrepair, forgotten by the masses in favor of practical and profitable multiplexes. MORE »

Hey New York, A Gift From Me to You
Amy Laviero :: Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 1:25 pm
A study published last month reported that, when it comes to happiness, New York ranks dead last when compared to any other state in the country. As if this accomplishment weren’t enough, the whole tri-state area monopolizes the bottom three spots on the list with Connecticut at 51 and New Joisey at 50. Not only is New York sad but so are its neighbors. MORE »
