Current Fashion Is Taking Plenty Of Cues From Woodland Creatures

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, March 26th, 2010 6:00 pm

Furries, rejoice!  Lately, I’ve been seeing a decidedly animalistic new trend emerging around the city and in tons of new designs globally.  I’m not talking about your typical fur coats and mink stoles, either.  Instead, it’s becoming increasingly popular to attach a fox tail to many accessories. Don’t be surprised if, when you’re out and about in coming months, you mistake a fashionista for a forest-dweller. MORE »

Amy Winehouse and Fred Perry Talk Tshirts

Shannon Hassett :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 1:45 pm

There are three things that distinctly remind me of Fred Perry: the really seedy 16-year-olds that dressed in tennis whites and sold drugs in front of my bus stop when I lived in Dublin, Ted Leo, and all these old pictures of my Father from college. It’s quite the mix of associations, but Fred Perry has managed to stick around, perhaps precisely because of this universality. The one thing undeniably on the brand’s side is its well crafted polo, the summer go-to for golfers and dignified hipsters alike. And now that bastion of class is getting an upgrade at the hands of England’s premiere fashionista: Amy Winehouse. While she may not often sport much clothing in her own right, the girl’s clearly got an eye for cool, and Fred Perry’s faith in her abilities may also prove the saving grace for her rapidly loosening grip on reality. Nothing kicks the heroin habit like 17 pieces in the singer’s trademark 50s style fashion exclusively in pink or black — her two favorite colors — and the partnership is an investment in her recovery as much as the product itself. So amen, Fred Perry, for stepping in where beehives, Blake and booze just weren’t doing the trick.

Designers Create The Couture Versions Of Light-Up Sneakers

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 1:40 pm

You might not be aware of this, but apparently there’s a market demand for an adult version of the light-up Geox and L.A. Gear sneakers we all excitedly stomped around in as children.  After all, when you Google the phrase “light-up sneakers,” the third entry down is a Yahoo! Answers query on where to find them for adults. MORE »

Prada and Louis Vuitton Trend Towards “Curves”

Amy Laviero :: Friday, March 12th, 2010 6:30 pm

The weight of runway models is a topic that’s been discussed ad nauseum. However, more recent articles, including one published today in the New York Times as well as the New Yorker’s recent story on Christina Hendricks, have been commending a movement away from the waif and back to voluptuous femininity.

Although I’m behind this idea 100 percent, I’m skeptical about the sincerity of this alleged “movement,” and photos featured in the Times article suggest anything but curves. Perhaps two women looked a bit healthier than your average model, but I would hardly describe them as “curvy,” and right next to the two is the photo of a Miu Miu model wearing a bright yellow wool minidress and looking something like 90’s Nickelodeon icon, Stick Stickley. Fashion Week Ain’t Shit Compared To ’90s Sitcom Style

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Monday, February 15th, 2010 6:20 pm

It’s Fashion Week in New York City, and it seems like all my friends are frothing at the mouth about their favorite overpriced designer’s new collections.  I love fashion, don’t get me wrong, but I tend to do a lot of hiding during Fashion Week.  I don’t much go in for the crowded parties, the guilt-inducing gift bags (I hate that free clothing/swag goes to the people that obviously need it the least), and the seemingly endless discussions about draping, ruching, eviscerating, defenestrating, and whatever other verbs people are applying to clothing these days.

Johnny Cupcakes to Tour U.S.

Amy Laviero :: Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 12:45 pm

Beginning in April, Johnny Cupcakes creator Johnny Earle will be traveling the country selling t-shirts out of his “crusty-suitcase;” the same method which helped skyrocket support of his brand in 2001. The line is currently based out of a store in Boston, Massachusetts, which is designed to resemble a bakery.

Earlier in the week, Earle blogged about his hopes for the tour, which include meeting and hanging out with supporters. He will be “slinging” 6 exclusive designs during his cross-country venture, and is currently looking for hosts to help him shack up in different cities. If you or anyone you know has a business and would like to help host the Johnny Cupcakes Suitcase Tour, Earle is accepting e-mail applications. Send a “very detailed e-mail, including photos and/or a website” to [email protected]

“Obama/Black” Shirt Pulled From Urban Outfitters

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 12:05 pm

Urban Outfitters came under scrutiny last week when customers noticed that they could buy a shirt in the color scheme “Obama/Black.”  As if that wasn’t weird enough, the shirt was gray.  I have a few problems with this marketing strategy.  Firstly, if you have to pick a politician to classify which color you’re using to market a shirt, wouldn’t it have been more fitting to use an old, silver-haired dude like Bush if the shirt in question is gray?  Oh, but that’s so five minutes ago, and I’m sure the hipsters responsible for the brand would rather die than have their finger slightly to the right of the pulse.  Then there’s the obvious fact that Obama is not, in fact, gray-skinned.  What a shocker, right?

I’m Salivating Over The New Armani Collection

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, January 29th, 2010 5:25 pm

Being originally from New Jersey, I grew up surrounded by tons of people who considered Armani a serious symbol of status.  Crunchy-haired guys and dolls would flash their tight-fitting t-shirts and so on in order to garner attention.  As a result, I cultured a severe distaste for the label, associating it with the mouthy assholes I knew and hated so thoroughly in high school (interestingly, Stephen associates it with Joanna Newsom).
