Teaser: Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson Break Up

Isaac Lekach :: Friday, August 28th, 2009 2:49 pm

Peep this trailer for the forthcoming album from Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson. Our very own Max Goldblatt put it together. Yorn, evidently inspired by the songs Serge Gainsbourg did with Brigitte Bardot, cold-called Johansson who agreed on the spot. Break Up is the result and will be released on September 15th. Enjoy the teaser and stream the single “Relator” here.

Trailer: Adventures Of Power

Isaac Lekach :: Thursday, August 27th, 2009 4:17 pm

By now everyone knows Jeremy Piven’s character on Entourage, Ari Gold, is based on super agent (and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s brother) Ari Emanuel. A lesser known fact is that the character was named after star Adrian Grenier’s best friend. Yup, it’s true. And now with Adventures Of Power, the real Ari Gold, is hoping to make a name for himself. Gold wrote, directed and starred in this movie. Looks like someone was inspired by Napoleon Dynamite.

Best CD We Got In The Mail Today: James Husband A Parallax I

Isaac Lekach :: Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 4:17 pm

02255_James_Husband_Album_Art_copy James Husband has been a member of of Montreal for some time now. He was also a part of the Athens-based collective Elephant Six, playing with Great Lakes, Essex Green, Ladybug Transistor, and Marshmallow Coast. A Parallax I is his debut album. Polyvinyl will release it on October 27th, but we’ve been listening to it all day. The collection of songs sound a bit like the bands he’s been associated with mixed with sixties bands like the Kinks and the Zombies. In fact, “Waiting on Rayne” sounds like a lost Zombies track. Parallax was recorded between 2003 and 2007 in of Montreal’s Athens-based home recording studio and Stockholm’s Up & Running and Truckland Studios. If you remember the Elephant Six bands and are nostalgic for their heyday, head over to Husband’s myspace page and preview some songs. Click here to listen.

Chevy Chase’s Return

SXB :: Monday, August 24th, 2009 12:38 pm

NBC has a new show premiering on September 17th at 9:30. It’s called Community and it stars Chevy Chase and Joel McHale. The Russo Brothers (Arrested Development) and Dan Harmon (The Sarah Silverman Program) are responsible. If you grew up in the eighties and/or have ever seen The Soup you’re probably looking forward to the show. Though the promo above made me chuckle, it is incredibly bizarre. Here’s hoping the show is both good AND bizarre. Right? Also, check out a Q&A with Chase and McHale here. -IL

Tonight At The Guggenheim

SXB :: Friday, August 14th, 2009 2:19 pm

The Guggenheim has decided to get all cool this summer as part of its 50th anniversary celebration extravaganza.

Tomorrow kicks off the first in a series called It Came From Brooklyn, which features Brooklyn faves High Places and veterans The Walkmen (who incidentally live on the Upper West side not Brooklyn, but whatever we’re letting it slide).

The event will also feature celebrated Sag Harbor author Colson Whitehead reading selections from Walt Whitman poems, and will be hosted by comedian Leo Allen.

Tickets are pricey, but the novelty alone of seeing High Places rock the Guggenheim would make this well worth it, and the rest of the night sounds pretty great, too.
