Abbey Road Up for Sale

Amy Laviero :: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 12:35 pm

When they purchased 3 Abbey Road in 1931, I doubt the Gramophone Company, which later joined with Columbia Gramophone Company to form EMI, had any idea the kind of landmark that it would ultimately become. The studio, most famously immortalized on the Beatle’s Abbey Road cover, has been put up for sale by EMI in a desperate attempt to raise funds for the ailing record label, although it has not been reported whether EMI will sell the Abbey Road brand name as well. The Abbey Road studios are probably worth more than the current United States debt, but the brand name is invaluable and it seems doubtful that anyone would purchase one without the other. MORE »

Review: David Byrne, Stories In High Fidelity

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 3:30 pm

David Byrne knows how to make buildings sing.  His 2008 installation, Playing the Building, was a study in transforming an enormous, historic ferry terminal into something of an instrument.  So when I saw that he would be giving a lecture about how venues and spaces shape how music is written, it definitely seemed worthwhile for a few reasons, first and foremost being that I am such an enormous fan that I, long ago, geekily coined the term “Byrneout” to refer to myself and others with similar ardor for the sprightly silver fox.  On a less fanatical note, he clearly knows a lot about how music and space interact and shape each other, so the talk would probably be engaging and authoritative (spoiler alert: it was!).

The Depreciation Guild Covers The Beatles

Isaac Lekach :: Monday, December 7th, 2009 3:30 pm

Covering The Beatles teeters on being sacrilegious. Few can pull it off-it’s not a recommended undertaking. Kurt Feldman’s The Depreciation Guild (Feldman is also the drummer for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart) mans this faithful rendition of “Because” beautifully-sprinkling the dream-pop aesthetics of his own band on top of one of the greatest Beatles songs ever written (not up for debate). Listen to it here. In other DG news, the band just finished a UK tour supporting the Pains. Check here for news, updates, etc.

Dark Night Of The Soul In Distribution Hell, David Lynch Still Terrifying

Braden Rosner :: Monday, November 23rd, 2009 3:05 pm

Dark Night of the Soul is an unbelievable album.

For realsies. Through the combined efforts of Danger Mouse- whose 2004 mashup opus fittingly titled The Grey Album caused EMI to furiously shake its fists over the use of unrequested Beatles’ tracks from The White Album combined with a cappella version of Jay Z’s The Black Album- and alternative folk rock aficionados, Sparklehorse. Plenty more after the jump.

More Beatles For Sale

Isaac Lekach :: Thursday, November 5th, 2009 9:00 am

Granted they put out a helluva lot of records during their time together, but it’s been thirty-nine years since Let It Be, their last album, and the Beatles are still putting out records. Sure, it’s not new material, but how many ways can you repackage and retool? Evidently, a ton. Check out this nifty new USB packaging. It’ll include their catalog, mini documentaries, rare photos from the archives and digitally enhanced liner notes. Merry Christmas everyone!
