Wolf Parade: Expo 86

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 1:30 pm

Wolf Parade
Expo 86
Sub Pop

Expo 86 is Wolf Parade’s third full-length album, and it seems they’re still interested in the manic noise and bizarre song composition that garnered their popularity in the mid-2000′s.

The Canadian outfit, which consists of members from the Handsome Furs and Sunset Rubdown/Swan Lake/Frog Eyes, have hit their stride on their latest release. Their songwriting has evolved some, and they’ve created well-crafted tunes that lean towards indie-pop rather than rock. MORE »

Slash’s Guitar Hero Rip-Off App

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, June 10th, 2010 4:30 pm

Right now there are a handful of  iPhone apps connected to different musicians and bands. Both Wilco and Death Cab For Cutie provide streaming music, and an app put out by guitar-god Santana offers guitar lessons for fans. Not wanting to be left out of the app store and the money generated by useless guitar games, Slash has created his own iPhone game eerily similar to Guitar Hero. Field Music Return With New Video And Tour Dates

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 4:45 pm

It’s an incredible thing when a band takes a hiatus and comes roaring back in with a new album, video and an extensive tour. Well, that is just what English rockers Field Music are doing. Brothers Peter and David Brewis are back with a new line-up that includes Kev Dosdale on guitar and keys and Ian Black on bass. After releasing two albums as Field Music, the brothers decided to take a break from the indie scene and work on their own music. They both put out solo albums in 2008, and they’ve now decided to give Field Music another go with a new music video and a whole heap of tour dates. See the video and dates after the jump. MORE »

Caribou: Swim

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:00 pm

Caribou, aka Dan Snaith, have ended the inexplicably long gap between the newest release Swim and the 2008 Polaris Music Prize winning album Andorra. The Canadian songwriter has used his time absorbing himself in the carefree dance music world, and Swim plays as a regurgitation of driving house beats, overly layered synths and Snaith’s own widely imaginative artistic touch. His vision was clear, and he set out to create “…dance music that sounds like it’s made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music…” MORE »

Wavves Finish New Album & Tour

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, April 15th, 2010 3:30 pm

What’s the best (most popular) way to announce anything these days? Via a blog/twitter I’d say, and that’s how Wavves front man Nathan Williams announced the completion of their sophomore album due out this summer. Here’s what he said in a blog post on Saturday:

“WE ALSO FINISHED RECORDING A RECORD IN OXFORD MISSISSIPPI AND ARE CURRENTLY MIXING IT. SOUNDS CARAAAZAAAAAAYYY AND WILL BE OUT THIS SUMMER. SEEEEEE YA!” MORE »

Thom Yorke Appears on New Flying Lotus Track

Nick Nicoludis :: Thursday, March 18th, 2010 2:25 pm

It was announced about a month ago that some big name star would appear on Flying Lotus’ new album Cosmogramma, set to come out on May 4th. The LA beat-chop artist revealed that among some other great musicians, Thom Yorke would sing on the track “…And The World Laughs With You.” I was excited, becasue I love Yorke’s hissy and seizure-like vocals, and when you combine that with Flying Lotus’ mangled beats I don’t see how you could go wrong. The album is probably going to be incredible if 2008′s Los Angeles is any indicator. The wait is finally over, and the collaboration track is finally out. MORE »

Titus Andronicus: The Monitor

Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 3:00 pm

Titus Andronicus have carved out a niche for themselves with their latest album The Monitor, which debuted today. Their debut release The Airing of Grievances was filled with boozy, self-loathing, “I hate my hometown” lyrics reminiscent of early emo bands coupled with frenzied guitar riffs and driving melodies. They had no qualms about expressing their hatred for New Jersey, where they are from, and conquered that dive bar sing-along quality early on in their career making them a garage-pop hit. It is clear that the guys in the band are literate and intelligent and with their latest album The Monitor, they prove their mastery of song writing and the ability to create infectious, heart-felt tunes that every suburban kid can relate to. The Bird And The Bee + Hall And Oates = Fun

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 2:20 pm

The Bird and the Bee’s “Interpreting the Masters, Volume 1: Hall and Oates” comes out on March 23, and trust me, it’s a well-produced, rollicking album that has equal parts kitsch value and real listening pleasure.  Although nothing can replace the original duo, this is a damn good interpretation of their work.
