Oprah: Handicapped Hater?

There have been a lot of rumblings on the Internet lately about Oprah and her hatred for the handicapped. What could ever cause such vitriol to circulate about a good-natured talk show host whom everybody loves?

“Your Own Show” is the name of the contest that Oprah’s been holding. People send in their audition tapes, and Oprah posts them on her site. People watch, vote, and eventually someone will win.

For a week or so, the charmingly funny Zach Anner and his idea for a world travel show has been in the lead. His unique twist on the tired formula of the travel show? He’s got cerebral palsy, and he’d like to do a travel show in spite of that. The guy’s fun to watch—just enough self-deprecating jokes to be charming, but not so many to look like he’s begging for pity.

The controversy lies in the mediocre Dr.Phyllis and her sudden updraft of votes, reportedly 300,000 within 20 minutes.

Add onto that this picture that’s been floating around the Internet lately, which shows Zach’s votes going down within a span of two minutes:

The picture could easily have been Photoshopped. Dr.Phyllis’s sudden swell of votes could have been legitimate. The site could have glitched accidentally, and there could very well not be some sneaky business hurting this poor guy’s votes.

Isn’t it pretty to think so? C’mon, Oprah! Let him play.
