Jeff Tweedy Takes on “Single Ladies”

Today, Pitchfork posted a video of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy performing at Chicago’s Vic Theatre this past March. During the benefit show, Tweedy performed a few pre-submitted fan requests. One girl requested he play one of two songs; either “Ashes of American Flags” off of Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” Naturally, Tweedy picked the latter. At first he waffles around with a few chords and sings the chorus, but then goes on to read the lyrics as a poem. The performance is somewhere between William Shatner and my high school English teacher. It’s awkward and hilarious and awesome. He even throws in a few of his very best BeyoncĂ© dance moves.
