Apartment Gardens: Hipster Trend or City Zen?
Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 12:15 pm
Few things scream “Hipster” like an apartment garden. But this Spring, when visiting my family in a small village about twenty miles due east of Albany, New York, I found something in the garage that struck my interest. A small cardboard box with a monsterous tomato plant hanging out of an upside down vinyl bag which is “as seen on TV.” It’s called a Topsy Turvy, and I was intrigued. And just like that, the seed was planted in my mind as the frost began to subside in late March. After placing the nearly pristine Topsy Turvy in with my bag of clothes, I had this sudden excitement bubbling up within me: “No more buying tomatoes!” I quietly thought to myself. MORE »

Miss Russia is Way More F-ed Up Than Miss USA
Carmel Lobello :: Wednesday, May 19th, 2010 2:08 pm
Leave it to Russia to one-up our ridiculous national scandals (or delights, depending on your point of view). Anna Malova, a former Miss Russia, just got arrested today outside a drug store in Greenwich Village for possession of narcotics, forgery, and criminal impersonation of a physician. If I were Rima Fakih right now, I’d be like, “Ahemm? Can we all just take second to examine exibit B and then reconsider the tragedy of what happened with me and my awesome tan body and that pole?

Brooklyn Enters Wal-Mart Warzone
Shannon Hassett :: Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 11:30 am
While nothing has been officially confirmed, major steps necessary for the arrival of New York City’s first Wal-Mart are all taken care of. The City Council has approved plans for the chain’s newest residence at the Gateway II Shopping Center in Jamaica Bay, Brooklyn, so all that’s left for the company to do is sign a lease. The Brooklyn Paper has labeled the ensuing battle “Warmart” — which is sad when you consider alternatives such as Walstall, Stallmart or Walwar — but not a surprise, given attempts by the retailer to open locations in Staten Island and Queens have previously been blocked. While some residents and Councilmen are angry, mostly due to the company’s exploitation of workers, others are pleased, citing the increase in jobs despite the lack of a union.

Bushwick Music Festival (March 24-27)
Nick Nicoludis :: Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 5:30 pm
Sure, SXSW was probably tons of fun with it’s all night parties and shows everywhere all the time, but Brooklyn is gearing up for its own inebriated celebration of music: Bushwick Music Festival. In association with Arts In Bushwick, Deli Magazine and Bushwick Music Studios the DIY festival is a four day romp from March 24-27. It all came together when the Bushwick Music Studios crew decided to unify all the best loft and warehouse spaces, as well as the most talented musicians, DJs and performance artists in the area. Most of the shows are really cheap, and are going down all over Bushwick. Get the full schedule after the jump. MORE »

MTA Cuts V-Line and Saves Bus Routes
Johnny Sanford :: Monday, March 22nd, 2010 12:45 pm
The MTA is in fiscal chaos. It’s got a $800,000,000 hole that it’s desperate to fill. New on the chopping block is the V-Line, to be replaced by the M-line, which would consequently stop M-line service in Lower Manhattan and Southern Brooklyn, according to The New York Times. Also expected to be cut are the jobs of hundreds of Subway Station agents (about 450 station agents and 600 administration staff). Saved, however, are 11 bus lines that were going to be cut. A 7% increase in subway fares is scheduled for 2011. Meanwhile, outer-Burroughs stations seem to be falling to ruins; weekend and night service is already atrocious and is only scheduled to get worse. MORE »

Girls Night Out!
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 1:05 pm
As a recently engaged lady, the third most popular question from my friends, after when is the wedding and how did he propose, is what are we doing for the bachelorette party? Not quite the clubbing type, I would prefer just an all out fun fest with some great friends, accompanied with booze, food and will most likely get stuck carrying around a penis straw for part of the festivities. So I love the latest video from the folks over at Serious Lunch, an improv and sketch comedy troupe from Brooklyn. It stars a handful of funny ladies, including Emmy nominated Hope Davis and Ellie Kemper from “The Office”, enjoying their Ladies Night with a few drinks and a lot of screams. Poking fun at ridiculous rituals like this is exactly what the internet is for! So check out the video after the jump and please watch the entire thing or you might miss a hilarious Zach Braff-themed pop culture reference. MORE »

20 Years of Yo-Lahnnnn-Da
Shannon Hassett :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 5:30 pm
It almost sounds too good to be true, but Yolanda Vega, everyone’s favorite lotto announcer, majored in economics (with minors in accounting and communications, no less). It should come as no surprise, then, that someone so well suited for such a career is celebrating 20 years on the job (to the day!). Decidedly the only person to ever make a steady living off the New York Lotto, her trademark ‘Yo-LAHNNNN-Dah’ sign-off has become a household staple (at least in the little slice of heaven that is the Tri-state). Here‘s a little treat for your ears, and here’s to 20 more years of the Vega.

Homebrew Culture invades New York City
Johnny Sanford :: Thursday, January 28th, 2010 1:00 pm
Homebrewin’ ain’t easy, but it sure is fun. Some people might scoff at the idea of getting their hands dirty in hops and grain, but homebrewing is fast becoming the hip trend in places like Brooklyn, as well as all over the world. The passion for homebrew is reaching a feverish pitch in this city, with the newly-renovated opening of “Brooklyn Homebrew” on 163 8th Street on 3rd Ave last week. With a line of brewers out the door upon it’s opening, it’s been a long time coming. MORE »

This Week’s Battle for Bedford
Craig Gaffney :: Friday, December 11th, 2009 4:00 pm
Perhaps the only sect in Williamsburg more zealous than its long-established Hasidic community is its contemporary crop of cycling Hipsters. In a radical effort (both in the drastic and “rad” sense of phrase), a group of vigilante bike enthusiasts took to the streets in the wee hours of Tuesday morning to repaint bike lanes that had recently been sandblasted by the city at the request of its Hasidic residents. Check it out.
Distress over the lane on Bedford Avenue appears to stem less from traffic concerns, but more so with the risqué attire being sported by some of its female riders (“hip-sluts” if you will), do we have a fun name for them yet? MORE »

Dear Louis CK, I’m Sorry…
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, November 6th, 2009 7:03 pm
New York is easily the epicenter of comedy, with hundreds of one liners being delivered to drunk crowds on a nightly basis. And this city becomes a comedy lovers’ wet dream this weekend with the annual New York Comedy Festival. There are over 100 performances this weekend, from the big names like Tracy Morgan, Patton Oswalt and Dane Cook, to small troops from the UCB and PIT theaters taking advantage of the hype and hoping this will be their last small gig. The highlight of the festival will obviously be Louis CK’s performance at Carolines on B’way this Sunday evening. His brash, witty and dark humor are a perfect fit for the times we are in and he has an awkward ease that works both during his live stand up and his time on screen. The epitome of a New York comic, CK manages to bring light and humor to some of the most gnarly topics, like divorce, unemployment and even kidnapping. This is why I owe the comic an apology. MORE »

Cassette To My Ex
Brenna Ehrlich :: Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 5:00 pm
I don’t know about you, but my favorite blogs are those that creepily delve into the lives of others: Passive Aggressive Notes, Post Secret, Postcards From Yo Momma. This is the kind of heart-warming schadenfreude that I thrive on. So imagine my joy when I discovered Cassette From My Ex, a blog that shares just that-and the stories behind the sappy playlists. And, like all awesome blogs, CFMY is coming out with a book-a book whose release you can celebrate in New York at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe tomorrow (Claudia Gonson from the Magnetic Fields will be there, and she’s played like, 69, songs about love).
Now this is probably the part of the post where I should be sharing my own cassette from an ex (you know, to connect with the readers and all), but the truth is, no one has ever made me a mixtape. Sure, one dude said he was going to once, and I’ve dated guys in bands, so it seems feasible, but no dice. I have, however, made a mixtape for an ex. I think the last song was “This is the End.” Yeah…
