Twilight: Eclipse To Feature Peter Murphy Of Bauhaus

Amy Dupcak :: Friday, June 25th, 2010 2:15 pm

Peter Murphy, known across the lands as ‘the godfather of goth,’ is one of the last truly vampiric musical beings secretly sucking blood behind stage (or so I hope). He performed Bauhaus’s most popular song, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” at the start of The Hunger, during a scene in which vampires David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve are preparing to feast. But now, Murphy, who hung from his ankles like a bat during a Nine Inch Nails show last summer, and who, at 52, still performs with all the theatrical bravado of his former days, is undertaking a new career move. Take a deep breath now: he’s making a cameo in Eclipse. MORE »

New Ugly Casanova Songs + More in Environmental Documentary

Amy Dupcak :: Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 5:45 pm

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock’s stripped-down side project, Ugly Casanova, released one astounding album, Sharpen Your Teeth, in 2002. Eight years later, he’s teamed up with filmmaker Emmett Malloy to record 8 brand new Ugly Casanova songs. Along with “Hotcha Girls” from Sharpen Your Teeth, these 8 songs are featured in 180° South, Malloy’s environmental documentary for Woodshed Films, and appear on the soundtrack, which is available today on Brushfire Records. James Mercer (the Shins, Broken Bells) and Mason Jennings also appear on the soundtrack. Along with Brock, they were all flown to to the Patagonia region of South America by Malloy to inspire them for the soundtrack. MORE »

Kurt Cobain Biopic in the Works…WHY?

Amy Dupcak :: Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 1:00 pm

We all knew it was coming someday…a Kurt Cobain biopic that cements his legacy in the annals of Hollywood. But anyone who knows anything about Cobain should know that therein lies a serious irony: Cobain was as far removed from the likes of Hollywood as any spotlit musician could be. He didn’t ride in limos or mingle on the red carpet, and he probably would have run screaming from Courtney if he’d been around for her plastic surgery transformations. But just like in life, Cobain’s fame isn’t really up to him, and he certainly has no say when it came to Courtney publishing his private journals, announcing his supposed anger toward Dave Grohl, or these plans to portray his complexities via Hollywood actor MORE »

Amy Dupcak :: Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 10:15 am

If a jam-packed boardwalk and amassment of hipster-y folk are not your thing, then you probably shouldn’t make the trek to Coney Island on July 17th. But if you can handle the heat and have a craving for FREE(!!) live music, then get your butt on the train and head to the Village Voice’s Siren Fest for it’s 10th anniversary.

What Is It, Crispin Glover?

Amy Dupcak :: Friday, June 18th, 2010 5:15 pm

When it comes to Crispin Hellion Glover, you either have no idea who he is, or you’re a) completely fascinated or b) completely disgusted. Perhaps most widely known as McFly from Back to the Future, and having just played the Knave of Hearts in Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, Glover’s primary artistic focus has been his It? trilogy, as well as the books he writes and performs as part of his Big Slide Show presentation. He tours his films and books around the country, stopping in places like IFC Center, where I saw him during two separate tours.

“Eccentric” is an adjective often used when describing Crispin Glover, and it’s not a bad one either, but he’s also a man on a personal mission. Glover acted in big-budget movies like Charlie’s Angels partially to finance art films that fall so outside the realm of Hollywood you can’t even see the smog. Controversy has been swirling like a sand storm over the first and now second film in his trilogy, titled What Is It? and It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine! respectively, but Glover tours the films in order to do Q&A sessions with the audience, and relieve his viewers of any moral worries. And what worries might these be? Well, here’s a glimpse… MORE »

Amy Dupcak :: Friday, June 18th, 2010 3:15 pm

So after several albums, an epic and bizarre string of music videos, Rocky Horror fame and 51 other films, you might have thought Meat Loaf would eventually retreat to the “Where are they now?” files, but guess again! To celebrate and promote the album, and to make sure you haven’t forgotten his skills, he’ll be ringing the opening bell at the The New York Stock Exchange on Monday, June 21st. MORE »

Only in Amanda Palmer’s Brain

Amy Dupcak :: Friday, June 18th, 2010 11:30 am

As singer and keyboardist of the Dresden Dolls, Amanda “Fucking” Palmer experimented with circus-y, punky, cabaret tunes while on a major label. Since then, she’s stepped out of the stripey tights and recorded a successful solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer?, which her loyal fans adored. But after escalating battles with Roadrunner Records, she was “pretty committed to getting dropped” by her label and thus set out fully on her own. MORE »
