Songs That Suck

SXB :: Friday, November 20th, 2009 5:30 pm

In honor of Vampire Day, we’ve put together a playlist of songs that suck. Don’t fault us for subjectivity. Remember songwriters, just because you wrote something you think is great doesn’t mean you actually have to play it in front of people. Check out the horror after the jump.

Amazing That ’70s Show Porn Parody

SXB :: Friday, September 11th, 2009 6:18 pm

Somebody finally had the bright idea to parody That ’70s Show as hardcore porn. The show launched the careers of some very good-looking, not-great-at-acting actors, so this particular lampoon makes a lot of sex sense. As a guy, I want to see Mila Kunis naked as much as I want to see Ashton Kutcher in the buff, so this the next best thing, yeah? Also, the quality isn’t half bad. The trailer’s worth a peek — it’s available after the jump. MORE »

Chevy Chase’s Return

SXB :: Monday, August 24th, 2009 12:38 pm

NBC has a new show premiering on September 17th at 9:30. It’s called Community and it stars Chevy Chase and Joel McHale. The Russo Brothers (Arrested Development) and Dan Harmon (The Sarah Silverman Program) are responsible. If you grew up in the eighties and/or have ever seen The Soup you’re probably looking forward to the show. Though the promo above made me chuckle, it is incredibly bizarre. Here’s hoping the show is both good AND bizarre. Right? Also, check out a Q&A with Chase and McHale here. -IL

Tonight At The Guggenheim

SXB :: Friday, August 14th, 2009 2:19 pm

The Guggenheim has decided to get all cool this summer as part of its 50th anniversary celebration extravaganza.

Tomorrow kicks off the first in a series called It Came From Brooklyn, which features Brooklyn faves High Places and veterans The Walkmen (who incidentally live on the Upper West side not Brooklyn, but whatever we’re letting it slide).

The event will also feature celebrated Sag Harbor author Colson Whitehead reading selections from Walt Whitman poems, and will be hosted by comedian Leo Allen.

Tickets are pricey, but the novelty alone of seeing High Places rock the Guggenheim would make this well worth it, and the rest of the night sounds pretty great, too.

Music Video: Helado Negro "Playas"

SXB :: Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 3:27 pm

Peep the latest from Helado Negro below — it’s for the song “Playas” and comes courtesy of Stereogum. Helado’s debut Awe Owe is out now. Tour dates have also been posted as well. Click here for all the info. And we’ve translated Sufjan Stevens’s cryptic praise over the record, which he released last week. The translated note can be found after the jump! -IL

Helado Negro makes me want to dance groovy.
It is like communicating with space(universe) by waving flag.
His sounds infatuate me more than the taste of sweet and sour sauce.
If you listen to his music thoroughly, you too will probably find your own groove like communicating with space(universe).
Dance Groovy!

Inherent Vice review by D.J. Pangburn

SXB :: Friday, August 7th, 2009 12:20 pm

Pynchon’s latest Inherent Vice is sunshine noir injected full of psychotropic drugs (banana dust included), spun through an endless summer of hash fumes, and exhaled it into the glowing daylight smog and Technicolor night-lights of the Los Angeles aether. What majesty! What peculiar rhythms! Nobody writes Los Angeles quite like Thomas Ruggles. He understands the post-human landscape of this collective dream that is El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula. Pynchon is the Bard of the Southland, the titan of this cosmically-touched megalopolis that is a magnetic pole for all that is strange and terrible in America. A land of cults, acid casualties, nuclear sunsets, Hunter S. Thompson, shifting tectonics, absorbed municipalities, marijuana dispensaries (1 per 6,000 citizens), corrupt cops, vanished orange groves, swirling vortices of gossip and water shortages. A place where the Jet Propulsion Laboratory founders co-mingled bodily fluids with other eccentrics at Aleister Crowley’s dark magic incantations in elaborate orgies; the birthplace of ARPANET, the precursor of the internet; home of Brian Wilson and the wild buffalo on Catalina Island, helicopters buzzing overhead all day long, and (to borrow Pynchon’s phrase from the book), “so forth.” California is the edge of the world in many ways — the last stop in the westward march of immigrants and emigrants. When those first generations of deranged searchers saw the edge, saw for themselves the Earth was round, they probably thought, Well, this is just as nice a place as any to settle. They settled on a fault! — maybe this accounts for the strange psychogeographical qualities of the city. We have an observatory here named after a man who attempted to shoot his wife, but she survived thanks to cat-like reflexes, albeit disfigured. And, of course, we have Scientology for our endless amusement. If you can’t appreciate the strange Pynchonian world of Inherent Vice, then you simply cannot appreciate L.A.. The man nails the city and its inhabitants. Pynchon’s nearest antecedent is Terry Southern (screenwriter of Dr. Strangelove) whose book Flash & Filigree also mirrored the sun-crazed ecstasy of Los Angeles. And if you, dear reader, can’t appreciate Pynchon, then you must flush Terry Southern down the drain with him. And the literary world is a very boring place without these madmen. MORE »

APW: A Slightly Late Recap

SXB :: Thursday, August 6th, 2009 8:26 am

All Points West. Boy was it off to a terrible start. To being with, there was MCA’s cancer scare. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Beastie Boys had to drop off the bill because Adam Yauch found a cancerous tumor in his parotid gland-evidently he’s well on the road to recovery now. Jay-Z performed in their stead. Many have called him the greatest rapper of all times (no offense Kanye) …and while his performance was definitely a highlight, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t bitter sweet. Then again, maybe I just have a soft spot for Jewish rappers. And no, I’m not referring to 2 Live Jews. Then there was the weather to contend with. Mud. My least favorite surface. Friday was …well, wet. And I didn’t need a refund, but the fine folks at APW offered a free pass to day two for those that couldn’t brave the rain on day one. But enough complaining …Vampire Weekend. Word has it their follow up to their self-titled debut is nearing completion. I didn’t catch the names of the new songs they performed, but it whet my appetite for what’s to come. Click here to watch a video of them performing “Mansard Roof” in the rain. I also really enjoyed the Yeah Yeah Yeahs set. It’s Blitz-record of the year? Too soon? I guess it’s just a pleasure to find a band making their best record well into their career. Check out some photos after the jump. -ML
