Thurston Moore Blogs; New Book and LP for Fall

Shannon Hassett :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 12:15 pm

Last week, we posted about one of the merits of the recent music blogocide: the birth of Thurston Moore’s “Flowers & Cream“. In a move that proves he may be cognisant of his role in the resuscitation of the blogosphere, Moore took a brief hiatus and then delivered some serious news via his site. Not only will he and Kim be recording a trio album with one Yoko Ono this year (blindfolded!), but in a masterful lack of cushioning, Moore noted, “new solo LP/new book this fall.” An hour before that, a poem was posted under the subject heading “found this poem i wrote as a 16 year old in 1974.” Yes, the poem is intrinsically cooler than anything we’re ever going to put out, and it’s not half bad in terms of talent either (which at 16 means a journal page with more than “fuck my parents” scrawled in ire across the top) — basically, Thurston Moore has never and will never do anything not worthy of a look, so here’s to a sonic resurgence this fall.

Yoko Ono, Sonic Youth, Eric Clapton, Bette Midler Come Together For Peace

Colm McAuliffe :: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 3:45 pm

In what was undoubtedly the most bizarre array of musicians I have ever witnessed, Yoko Ono celebrated her upcoming 77th birthday and her musical career with this mass collaboration at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Hosted by her son Sean Lennon, the sprightly avant-garde guru sang selections from her career, initially with the ‘new’ Plastic Ono Band (featuring Mark Ronson) and subsequently with an all-star cast - Scissor Sisters, Justin Bond, Gene Ween, Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore, Bette Midler, Paul & Harper Simon, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voorman and session drummer extraodinaire Jim Keltner.

Thurston Moore’s Blog Back in Action

Shannon Hassett :: Monday, February 15th, 2010 4:55 pm

The philosophical wonder that is Semisonic once told me something I’ll never forget: Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. This is why #musicblogocide2k10 is already starting to produce some awesome retaliation projects, or in the case of Thurston Moore, some needed motivation. While registering for a blog in 2006, its pages remained empty until late last week when “Flowers & Cream” began to bloom. The blog is hosted on blogger, the platform owned by Google and the target of the numerous overnight shutdowns of popular music blogs that quickly became known as the “Musicblogcide” of 2010. At this point at least, “Flowers” is mostly a collection of pictures and the tamer musings of Moore, though he’s begun to publish some personal bits here and there, including a poem entitled “7th floor overlooking manhattan bridge.” No mp3s as of yet, so you should still have some time to check it out.

Wintry Mix: A Playlist To Keep You Feeling Warm & Powerful

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Thursday, January 14th, 2010 3:25 pm

New York in January and February is suicide-inducingly cold.  Sometimes it seems that the only thing it’s got going for it is the wintry camaraderie that it elicits in its people.  We love to commiserate about the weather, be it in the office, among friends, or with strangers, especially the smokers among us.  That’s a pretty weak high point, but, in truth, it’s not the only one out there.   Winter is best when you spend it holing up by yourself or with a few choice loved ones and reading, playing board games, drinking whiskey, and, of course, snuggling under the sheets.  The following playlist is intended to be a soundtrack to all of those activities.

Listen to some good tunes, win stuff and help kids all in one evening. Head to Brooklyn’s Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave) at 8 pm tonight for a benefit to raise money for the P.S. 31 chess team, who recently got their funding cut. The night will feature the musical stylings of My Teenage Stride, Soft Black, Dream Diary and the Sleepies. It’s only 5 bucks, and you could win a pair of tickets to upcoming Mountain Goats/Sonic Youth/Ted Leo shows (thanks to Matador Records), plus other awesome prizes. Go drink. For the good of the children.
