Natalie Portman Gets a Little Stoned

Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, February 25th, 2010 1:47 pm

Natalie Portman is not new to stoner humor, so I am super stoked to see what she does with “Best Buds”. The project, which Portman will star in, as well as produce, is set around a weed-infused road trip between three best friends. The girls set off to San Diego to bond and refuel before Portman’s characters wedding, which is THIS CLOSE to sending her to the crazy house. And take it from someone in the middle of planning a nuptial extravaganza - it can get pretty hectic. The script was penned by Jamie Denbo of “Ronna and Beverly” fame, so expect a great deal of neurotic and sexual humor. Personally, I think the American movie going audience, especially those of us with boobs, are really ready for some raunchy, stoner humor to be directed our way - so here’s to hoping they don’t go the mushy way out and keep it real. I’d prefer more The Hangover than say Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I’ll be happy just as long as the friends aren’t fighting over dresses, shoes or a dude.

The Enigma That is Taye Diggs

Matt Kiebus :: Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 3:50 pm

This might sound strange, but I spend an inordinate amount of time pondering the career of Taye Diggs. How can you not? The man is positively mesmerizing. His winning smile, magnetic charm, and with inspiring performances in Malibu’s Most Wanted and House on Haunted Hill, it is impossible to not admire the man. You have to respect an actor that doesn’t get by on his looks alone, consistently wowing audiences with his sheer acting brilliance. How does he do it?

All sarcasm aside, the real question is how does Taye Diggs stay relevant? I mean other than owning the entire Fitness Made Simple VHS series by John Basedow. Diggs has an affable personality that makes him difficult to dislike, combine that with his looks and you have some everyone your grandma, sister, mailman, and most recently Miss Piggy would all like to bang. The Life-Size Edward Cullen/Robert Pattinson Pillow Is Freakish

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 5:55 pm

…for a few reasons.

1) Think of the demographic for this thing.  It makes for a terrifying mental image.

2) As has been pointed out by the commenters on the seller’s webpage, it looks a lot more like Barry Manilow.  Is he slated to play the new pouty, glittery half man/half beast who competes with the other two freaks for that girl’s affection in the next movie?  Did I miss those headlines?  Personally, I think Manilow could be great in the role of a brooding centaur.

Roger Ebert Sallies Forth

Amy Rose Spiegel :: Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 4:00 pm

When Roger Ebert lost most of his mandible in 2006, rendering him speechless, he took to the Internet in order to continue what he does so well (some, including myself, would say he’s the best): writing about movies.  Only now, he writes about so much more - mortality, memories, and his devoted wife, Chaz are just some of the intimate topics he chooses to discuss with his readers.

Classic Movie Theaters: The Refurbished and Forgotten

Matt Kiebus :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 3:45 pm

Movie theaters have been an escape for generations of people, a place to forget about outstanding electric bills and minimum wage paychecks. There is something magical about seeing films at movie theaters, the arresting combination of moving pictures and music merge to create portal into a different world. During the 1920s and 30s massive theaters were built across the country, designed in Art Deco style and finished with flair. These theaters were most prominent throughout golden age of film, when men wore jackets and ties and women dresses to the movies. Over time these grand cinemas have fallen into disrepair, forgotten by the masses in favor of practical and profitable multiplexes. MORE »

In addition to the noteworthy acts featured in the musical portion of the festival, like the Magnetic Fields, Atlas Sound, !!!, and Mirah, just to name a few, some intriguing-looking films have been selected to be showcased as well.  They’re all music-based documentaries, but they focus on disparate mindsets and experiences within the musical world.

The Year in Film in Seven Minutes

Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 9:41 pm

Have seven minutes? If so, please check out the beautifully crafted tribute video edited by Kees van Dijkhuizen, who compiled all of the 342 films that were released this year into a seven minute video. van Dijkhuizen created a similar project last year, but I prefer this year’s edit, from the choice of represented scenes to the background music. The highly anticipated biopic on the all girl rock band who put a strangle hold on the music industry in the late 1970’s has finally hit the web. And if these clips are any indication, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and the rest of the ladies fully embodied what it takes to be in The Runaways. The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month and hits theaters nationwide in March 2010. Check out the trailer after the jump! MORE »
