Julian Casablancas Spread Christmas Cheer On Fallon
Isaac Lekach :: Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 9:00 am
Julian Casablancas brought his cover of “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night and performed it with the show’s host and Horatio Sanz. Watch the performance of the SNL classic here. If only Tracy Morgan and Chris Kattan were on hand, then we could call it a reunion. If you’re curious, or can remember the original-find it here.

Better to Guest Star Than Fade Away
Braden Rosner :: Friday, November 13th, 2009 2:10 pm
I just saw Gavin Rossdale on some shitty run-of-the-mill cop drama.
Gavin Rossdale, the same frontman of Bush whose 1994 album Sixteen Stones would become a monumental purchase for the my naive 7-year-old self. The same Gavin Rossdale who’s been getting dirty with Gwen Stefani since her Tragic Kingdom days. He used to be to ’90s music what Skeet Ulrich was to mediocre ’90s films. When an entire decade was rebounding from the loss of Kurt Cobain, who answered the call? Gavin Fucking Rossdale, that’s who. Now look at him. He’s playing the frontman of some stupid vampire goth band on Criminal Minds. The band resembles some sort of brutal hybrid between Guns N’ Roses and The Misfits-like if Axel and Danzig raised a love child together. Except, you know, with strobe lights. Did I mention Rossdale’s character also thinks he’s a vampire? That’s still cool, right? Oh, good-the guy from Dharma and Greg is in this show too. Ugh, the one who played Greg-not that tall dude who played Dharma. It’s official, primetime is where our musicians of yesteryear come to die. I wonder if years down the road we’ll get to see someone like Julian Casablancas guest starring on CSI: New Haven? Now that’s a career suicide I’d watch.

Julian Casablancas: Phrazes For The Young
Isaac Lekach :: Friday, November 6th, 2009 9:30 am
Phrazes For The Young, Julian Casablancas’s solo record, came out this past Tuesday. If you haven’t heard it yet, it is streaming on Myspace, where his version of “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” (the SNL holiday song) is also posted. There’s obviously been a fair amount of hype surrounding this release. Is it better than the Strokes? Albert Hammond Jr.’s records? Little Joy? Nickle-Eye? FUCK. Them’s are a lot of questions. Personally, Little Joy’s record (Strokes’ drummer Fab Moretti’s project, for those not in the know) is my favorite Strokes-related offering. But Julian’s record isn’t bad at all. It’s been criticized for its slick production courtesy of Jason Lader (Maroon 5, Rilo Kiley). Still, single “11th Dimension,” despite being too long, is quite a jam. “Glass” is another fav. Yes, Phrazes is certainly fit to tide us over until the next Strokes record comes. If it ever does. Should I listen? YES.
