Noah & The Whale Make Album AND Film!
SXB :: Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 9:40 am
Noah & The Whale’s forthcoming second album The First Days Of Spring couldn’t be more of a departure from their jubilant debut Peaceful, The World Lay Me Down. It is grander in scope, slower in tempo, and certainly moodier. Though PTWLMD spawned several cutesy music videos, TFDOS has a forty-five minute film accompanying it! Click here for more details. See the trailer, which is set to the first single “Blue Skies” below. TFDOS will be released on August 31. -IL

LOMOGRAPHY Competition!
SXB :: Monday, July 27th, 2009 12:35 pm
Lomography and Death + Taxes Present “The Future is…” competition. Click here or after the jump for details!
Here at Lomography we all know that the Future is Analogue. But of course, that’s not all the future is. The future can be anything we imagine, and many things we couldn’t imagine.
For this competition, The Lomographic Society along with our friends at Death + Taxes Magazine want to know what else the future is. Is it the apocalyptic wasteland of all our worst fears, or a world where hope has trumped despair? Is the planet populated by aliens, robots and time travelers? Have we found ways to end our wars, reduce our waste, and fix our environment? What advances will make life easier? What mistakes could set us back?
We want to know these answers of course. But we also just want to know what the future means to you. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 25 years? 50 years? Show us the goals you set for yourself, the dreams you will strive to achieve, and the people you hope will be there when you do. In other words, finish this sentence with a photo: The Future is…
10 lomographic prophets selected by Death + Taxes will be awarded with an incredible Diana F+ Blackjack Special Edition camera as a prize for their visionary predictions.
But that’s not all. Each of the 10 winning photos will appear in Death + Taxes Magazine as part of their November issue dedicated entirely to the question: what is the future?
But wait, there’s more! All 10 photos will be printed in large size to be put on display at the Lomography Gallery Store NYC as part of our very first ever gallery exhibition show beginning on October 13th, the launch date of the Death + Taxes issue!
After the issue is released, Death + Taxes readers will be able to use “Mobot”- a technology that allows you to access more content from each page of the magazine through your mobile phone -to actually vote for a winning image! The one winner picked by the D+T readers will receive an LC-A+ Starter Kit - the legendary snapshot camera that has inspired so many in the past and present, and will surely inspire many in the future.
Winning images will need to be printed in large format for the exhibition and in high-resolution for the issue, so please have a hi-res scan available for print, or a negative of your image to print from.
By submitting to this competition, you grant Death + Taxes Magazine to reprint your photos in their magazine with only a photo credit to you, and you grant both Lomography and Death + Taxes the rights to use your photo for any and all promotions associated with this project. You also grant the Lomography Gallery Store the right to reproduce your work in large size for an in-store gallery exhibition. After the exhibition has concluded, you can pick up your print at the Lomography Gallery Store NYC, or pay all shipping costs associated with sending the print to you.
So take us on a lomographic journey into the future and show us what the future is…

Best CD We Got In The Mail Today
SXB :: Friday, July 24th, 2009 3:14 pm
OK so maybe we didn’t get this CD in the mail today today. Sometimes the office monster eats ‘em up and sometimes, as was the case with this one, it just takes a while to get to. Friends, which was released on June 23rd, is moody at times, but always melodic. It’s a perfect score for these humid summer nights. If Luke Top’s name doesn’t ring a bell Fool’s Gold (his band) probably does. He has also collaborated with Foreign Born and Cass McCombs (both featured guests on Friends …maybe the album’s title refers to them). “Plainest Drought” and album closer “Firestorm” are personal highlights. But don’t trust me. Stream some songs here and decide for yourself! Also, look for Fool’s Gold’s debut on September 29th. -IL

Last Weekend: Coney Island Baby
SXB :: Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 11:34 am
We had so much fun at our rooftop party @ Siren Fest with Colt 45 last weekend that we’ve been taking it easy all week and just now getting around to posting about it.
As you can see it was a perfect day, with plenty of beer and bbq, on the best rooftop in Coney. For more pics from the day, click here. If you missed it this year, be sure to keep an eye out for the party next year — the whole roof will be astro-turfed and filled with inflatable beach furniture.
Thanks to Colt 45 and Cha Cha’s for a great time. We’ll see you next summer!-AM

Dent May plays Mariachi in a Mexican Restaurant
SXB :: Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 9:53 pm
Dent May and his Magnificent Ukelele brought his strumming and his crooning into a local Mexican taqueria to bust a move Mariachi-style. Sure, it seems like this video was maybe conceived by some marketing folks trying to make something viral for the band, and sure it would have been funnier if they had dressed up like traditional Mariachis — but you know what, it’s pretty goddam funny, especially the waiter who has to butt through them to get clock into work. We say, Well played, May — viral away… -AM

The Clientele at Williamsburg Hall of Music
SXB :: Monday, July 20th, 2009 12:10 pm
Last night, London’s The Clientele performed at the Williamsburg Hall of Music. The set list began with “Nighttime” by Big Star and continued with songs that span their entire career that began in 1991-nine years before their official first release Suburban Light.
If you’re unfamiliar with their unique brand of pop, their tempo of choice typically lingers somewhere between slow and very slow. Think Nick Drake. Live, however, the band turned it up a notch and (pardon the expression) …rocked out (especially on an extended rendition of “Sketch” off the forthcoming Bonfires On The Heath). Singer Alasdair Maclean also effectively entertained the audience with self-deprecating quips while he tuned his guitar. Highlights included “Jennifer & Julia” and “Harvest Time” also off Bonfires On The Heath, which will be October 6th via Merge. -IL
