NJ Nets Move to… NJ

While the Meadowlands are technically a part of New Jersey, they mean nothing more than their promise of greater things: professional sporting events or the exit for the George Washington Bridge. Lots of respectable teams play in the state yet call New York their home, and so New Jersey is left with only a basketball team to show for its hospitality, and a shitty one at that. The announcement of the team’s move to Brooklyn definitely got me listening, however, and I was suddenly filled with a loyalty that lacked any justification. It was one of those ‘I’ll make fun of my brother as much as I want, but don’t you even dream about chiming in’ moments, and Jay-Z was now that dick friend. MORE »

Are You A Bad American For Not Liking Olympics?

The Olympics officially kick off this evening, and millions of people plan on tuning in tonight and over the next few weeks. An estimated fifty-three percent, actually. Although that number’s down a bit from the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, it’s still a significant amount. Yet, unlike these people, I can’t bring myself to give a damn…not about the stats and scores, anyway. I don’t much care whether we win in figure skating, the most popular sport, or bobsledding, the gayest. Nor does roughly forty-seven percent of the nation. I wonder: Does that make us bad American, or good ones?
