Girls Night Out!
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 1:05 pm
As a recently engaged lady, the third most popular question from my friends, after when is the wedding and how did he propose, is what are we doing for the bachelorette party? Not quite the clubbing type, I would prefer just an all out fun fest with some great friends, accompanied with booze, food and will most likely get stuck carrying around a penis straw for part of the festivities. So I love the latest video from the folks over at Serious Lunch, an improv and sketch comedy troupe from Brooklyn. It stars a handful of funny ladies, including Emmy nominated Hope Davis and Ellie Kemper from “The Office”, enjoying their Ladies Night with a few drinks and a lot of screams. Poking fun at ridiculous rituals like this is exactly what the internet is for! So check out the video after the jump and please watch the entire thing or you might miss a hilarious Zach Braff-themed pop culture reference. MORE »

St. Vincent Goes the Comedic Route in New Video
Shannon Hassett :: Thursday, February 4th, 2010 2:40 pm
Annie Clark, the singer better known as St. Vincent, released a clip via her Myspace of the new video for “Laughing With a Mouth of Blood” (off her latest effort Actor). The video features the comedic stylings of thunderAnt, a duo composed of SNL’s Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney badass Carrie Brownstein. The pair play bookstore owners who host an in-store for the singer, themselves… and, well, you’ll see. Check out the clip here.

Ruth Flowers: Dinosaur On The Wheel
Gray Hurlburt :: Friday, January 29th, 2010 4:45 pm
Her bulky solar shades, blue hair, and spangled bomber jacket identify Ruth Flowers, a 69-year-old grandmother from Bristol, England, as “DJ Mamy Rock” when she spins in clubs popular to revelers around Europe. At her late age, the gumption of an old to evenhandedly master digital equipment and spin with a degree of talent should be admired. It’s a literal knobby fist in the face of withering away.

New Video “VCR” From The XX
Adam Kearney :: Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 4:35 pm
You can see the new video from the XX over on Stereogum. It’s directed by Marcus Söderlund, a Swedish director previously known for his work with Jens Lekmen. The black and white video shows a budding teenage romance in the basement of some possibly abandoned building. Fires are lit, chandeliers look trippy, the two kids write messages to each with marker on a building wall and then rip the paint off. She holds up a lantern and the world turns color.., then they smash it, emblazoning a giant, flaming XX on the wall. It cuts to plants, a tiny monkey, and they are both crashed out.

Michael Cera’s Turn as a Bad Boy: Drug Tripping in the New Islands’ Video
Elissa Suh :: Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 12:30 pm
Okay, everyone’s tired of Michael Cera playing himself, but at least he’s trying something new, purposely crashing cars, wanted for arson and whatnot. In the end, it’s just Michael Cera playing “Michael Cera trying to be a badboy.” What’s next for young Cera? Drugs of course. See him trip in “No You Don’t” the new Islands video, compliments of Pitchfork.tv or click after the break. Even the haters will be pleased.

Check out the video premiere of “Longform” by The Dodos on Pitchfork from their third album Time To Die released this past summer. It’s got that remiss roadtrip vibe, perennial sunlight, and an unceasing camera pan that reveals, well, nothing.

Noah and the Whale Talk Film, Tour, and Beyond
Stephen Blackwell :: Monday, November 30th, 2009 1:20 am
Here’s a video we recently filmed with Noah and the Whale during their three-night stint at the Mercury Lounge. The indie film-obsessed band talk about their movie, The First Days of Spring, their upcoming album, and their tour. (We tried getting their thoughts on Fantastic Mr. Fox, but they hadn’t seen it yet. We bet they loved it.)
Check it out after the jump or over at VTech.

The Avett Brothers Get Local for New Video
Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 5:32 pm
No this is not a local cable shopping network commercial, its the latest music video from The Avett Brothers. Jody Hill, subversive director of Foot Fist Way and Observe & Report, worked on the latest video in support of the band’s single “Slight Figure Of Speech” and its all kinds of good. To add to the mystery behind the commercials, Hill did a whole slew of them for The American Budget network , which you can view on their YouTube channel. Not sure if this video does a better job of promoting the band or getting fans of Hill and “Eastbound & Down” psyched for its upcoming second season on HBO. Either way, it reminds of the good ol’ days, when music videos were goofy, much like Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” and Foo Fighters’.

Japandroids Road Relief
Stephen Blackwell :: Thursday, November 19th, 2009 1:45 pm
Here’s a line of poetry for you: touring is boring. Bands do all sorts of stuff to break free from the grind of 12-hour drives, so-so attended shows, and the cramped discomfort of the van. Mostly they do drugs and, even if they’re ugly, have sex with strangers.
How do Japandroids blow off steam? They set off fireworks with children. Watch ‘em do it after the jump. (Also, we’re not saying Japandroids are ugly and don’t work in their fair share of lovemaking. For all we know they could be having sex right now.) MORE »

Music Video: High Places “I Was Born”
Elissa Suh :: Monday, November 2nd, 2009 5:40 pm
Originally born out of Brooklyn, two-piece band High Places released a new video for their single “I Was Born” from their self titled record. The bassoon sounds of Mary Pearson start off the song, later joined by Rob Barber’s melodious guitar. Completely without color, the video for “I Was Born” features trippy super impositions and low-key lighting, making it entirely a High Places creation.

Music Video: Ramona Falls “I Say Fever”
Elissa Suh :: Monday, November 2nd, 2009 3:20 am
Once part of Portland trio Menomena, Brent Knopf has embarked on his first solo venture called Ramona Falls. The first video from LP Intuit, entitled “I Say Fever” debuted last week and was directed by animation genius Stefan Nadelman, who also happens to be a 2009 Sundance winner. See the video for “I Say Fever” after the jump. Ramona Falls’ spacey sound is matched by the videos surreal visuals. Eerie mannequin-like folk, animals in suits, and terrorizing birds are all present in this unearthly tale of the West.
Beware of the wild things.
