Hollywood, Are You Trying to Kill Goldie Hawn?

Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 1:18 pm

Seriously, Hollywood why are you trying to remake all of Goldie Hawn’s classic movies? Last week, it was announced that J.Lo will stink up star in an updated version of the 1980′s classic Overboard. And now it seems that wasn’t enough, as today it was announced that NewLine/Warner Bros. are set to remake of Private Benjamin, with Anna Faris to star. Yes, the assault on my lovely childhood continues, but at least this time the casting is perfect. While normally I would threaten an all out attack on Hollywood for the audacity to even attempt to remake such a classic, my love of all things Faris is calming my anger and peaking my interest in a remake. Michel Gondry Chats About ‘Thorn in the Heart’ & ‘The Green Hornet’

Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 2:46 pm

Last week, I had the chance to sit down with Michel Gondry, acclaimed director and mind-blowing extraordinaire, to discuss his most recent works, Thorn in the Heart and The Green Hornet. While the family based documentary and super hero action film couldn’t be any more different than each other, Gondry seems to approach all of his projects with the same vigor and whimsy one has learned to expect. Alex Chilton, RIP

Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, March 18th, 2010 12:31 pm

Last night, the sad news of the passing of Alex Chilton flooded the internet via various memorial tweets and blog tributes. Chilton passed away at the age of 59 at a New Orleans hospital, reportedly of a heart attack. The musician is best known for his lead role in Big Star, who was supposed to play a show this Saturday at SXSW. While they might not have received mainstream recognition, the band’s power pop effect can be found on records from R.E.M., Beck and most obviously, The Replacements, whose song ‘Alex Chilton’ praised the singer and his music. Battle I’d Pay to See: Morrissey vs Damien Hirst

Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 2:39 pm

I can always get behind a bashing on Damien Hirst. Recently, Morrissey interviewed his close friend and visual artist Linder Sterling for INTERVIEW magazine and the two discussed the abhorrent usage of dead animals in Hirst’s artwork. As a fellow vegetarian, I can understand what prompted Morrissey to lash out at Hirst. MORE »

Music Video: OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass”

Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 3:21 pm

Whatever you may think about OK Go, you have to give them credit for continuously bringing it with their music videos. I am convinced that if MTV was functioning like it did back in the 90′s, they would be one of the biggest bands in America if only in part due to their clever music videos. The band teamed up with Syyn Labs and director James Frost to create the four-minute Rube Goldberg machine to be featured in the video. Check out the a-maze-ing (get it?) video after the jump. Roger Ebert Gets His Voice Back

Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 12:58 pm

Today, Oprah will air her highly anticipated interview with celebrated film critic and journalist Roger Ebert. The man who is synonymous with film criticism in America has become a hero to many recently thanks to his insightful film critiques, helpfulness with fellow journalists, prolific Twitter account and his Esquire profile. The magazine published a brilliant and artfully detailed profile of the man, including his battle with cancer that left him missing half his jaw and without a voice. MORE »

Gorillaz ‘Stylo’ Gets the HD Treatment

Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 12:35 pm

The video for “Stylo”, the first single off of the Gorillaz soon to be released “Plastic Beach”, is full of pissed off cartoons, crazy Tarantino style car chases, as well as the always amazing Bruce Willis. Seems it isn’t a music video nowadays without at least one celebrity cameo. While I personally don’t love the song, the video is perfect for my fellow action film lovers. EMI restricted the video from being embedded, so click through to check out it out, along with other HD goodies, on the band’s YouTube page.

Natalie Portman Gets a Little Stoned

Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, February 25th, 2010 1:47 pm

Natalie Portman is not new to stoner humor, so I am super stoked to see what she does with “Best Buds”. The project, which Portman will star in, as well as produce, is set around a weed-infused road trip between three best friends. The girls set off to San Diego to bond and refuel before Portman’s characters wedding, which is THIS CLOSE to sending her to the crazy house. And take it from someone in the middle of planning a nuptial extravaganza - it can get pretty hectic. The script was penned by Jamie Denbo of “Ronna and Beverly” fame, so expect a great deal of neurotic and sexual humor. Personally, I think the American movie going audience, especially those of us with boobs, are really ready for some raunchy, stoner humor to be directed our way - so here’s to hoping they don’t go the mushy way out and keep it real. I’d prefer more The Hangover than say Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I’ll be happy just as long as the friends aren’t fighting over dresses, shoes or a dude.

Vampire Weekend Get a Little Help From Their “Friends”

Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 3:01 pm

How do you grab attention for your music video in 2010? Invite a handful of celebrities to do cameos in it. The video for “Giving Up the Gun”, the second single off of Vampire Weekend’s Contra, has the band playing alongside a crazy tennis match up with a powerful redhead and a host of famous opponents. Directed by the notable Malloy Brothers, who have worked with Silversun Pickups, Oasis, Foo Fighters and Weezer, the video captures the quirkiness of the band, as well as their level of fame, with appearances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Little Jon, RZA and even a Jonas Brother (Joe to be exact). Girls Night Out!

Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 19th, 2010 1:05 pm

As a recently engaged lady, the third most popular question from my friends, after when is the wedding and how did he propose, is what are we doing for the bachelorette party? Not quite the clubbing type, I would prefer just an all out fun fest with some great friends, accompanied with booze, food and will most likely get stuck carrying around a penis straw for part of the festivities. So I love the latest video from the folks over at Serious Lunch, an improv and sketch comedy troupe from Brooklyn. It stars a handful of funny ladies, including Emmy nominated Hope Davis and Ellie Kemper from “The Office”, enjoying their Ladies Night with a few drinks and a lot of screams. Poking fun at ridiculous rituals like this is exactly what the internet is for! So check out the video after the jump and please watch the entire thing or you might miss a hilarious Zach Braff-themed pop culture reference. MORE »

John Mayer is Still Crazy After All These Years…

Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, February 11th, 2010 1:52 pm

The award for foot in mouth syndrome goes to John Mayer. The musician, who would obviously prefer to be a stand up comic, has managed to offend nearly every human being with his latest interview with Playboy Magazine. Self-aware and attention craving Mayer held nothing back in the article where he discussed his time with his famous exes Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, whom he described as “sexual napalm” and “addictive”. ‘Small Wonder’ is Soooo Gay!

Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 9:19 pm

If you are reading this, chances are you watched at least one episode of the American 80′s treasure “Small Wonder”, a low budget syndicated sitcom based around the Lawsons and the odd little robot girl, V.I.C.I. who lives with the family and is treated like an actual child. Only in the 80′s folks, only in the 80′s. The show has just been released on DVD (out on February 16th) and culture vulture Rich from FourFour took one for the team and watched all NINE hours of the program!!! MORE »

Sundance at a Theater Near You

Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, January 28th, 2010 1:00 pm

So you couldn’t afford a ski chalet and a trip to Park City this year? Miss out on all the celebrity sightings and killer parties? Oh, you were just interested in the films premiering there? Well, you are in luck then. Sundance is headed to a city near you. Tonight, eight theaters in cities across America will get the chance to view and discuss some of the more critically favored films of the festival. The filmmakers and producers will be on hand to chat a bit about the process behind their films and the audience will get a closer look at what its really like to see a film in a festival setting, just without the gifting suites and parties. This is a new addition to the festival’s program and is being done in the hopes of broadening the awareness of both the festival and the films it celebrates.
