Legendary drinker and sporadic Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is reportedly assembling a high-profile band to make a charity single for the Haiti earthquake relief. The supergroup, comprising MacGowan, Johnny Depp, his wife Vanessa Paradis, Nick Cave and Bobby Gillespie, are set to cover Screamin’ Jay Hawkins “I Put A Spell On You”.
The song, originally released in 1956, has been covered by numerous artists in the interim, ranging from Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Van Morrison to The Cramps, Tom Waits and Cave’s old band, The Birthday Party.
Details of the project are sketchy at present but photographer Danny Clifford confirmed the collaboration on his blog, revealing “there are some very big names involved and one of them is my mate Shane MacGowan, bless him. He is a good sport.”
