‘Small Wonder’ is Soooo Gay!
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, February 5th, 2010 9:19 pm
If you are reading this, chances are you watched at least one episode of the American 80’s treasure “Small Wonder”, a low budget syndicated sitcom based around the Lawsons and the odd little robot girl, V.I.C.I. who lives with the family and is treated like an actual child. Only in the 80’s folks, only in the 80’s. The show has just been released on DVD (out on February 16th) and culture vulture Rich from FourFour took one for the team and watched all NINE hours of the program!!! MORE »

Sundance at a Theater Near You
Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, January 28th, 2010 1:00 pm
So you couldn’t afford a ski chalet and a trip to Park City this year? Miss out on all the celebrity sightings and killer parties? Oh, you were just interested in the films premiering there? Well, you are in luck then. Sundance is headed to a city near you. Tonight, eight theaters in cities across America will get the chance to view and discuss some of the more critically favored films of the festival. The filmmakers and producers will be on hand to chat a bit about the process behind their films and the audience will get a closer look at what its really like to see a film in a festival setting, just without the gifting suites and parties. This is a new addition to the festival’s program and is being done in the hopes of broadening the awareness of both the festival and the films it celebrates.

The Year in Film in Seven Minutes
Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 9:41 pm
Have seven minutes? If so, please check out the beautifully crafted tribute video edited by Kees van Dijkhuizen, who compiled all of the 342 films that were released this year into a seven minute video. van Dijkhuizen created a similar project last year, but I prefer this year’s edit, from the choice of represented scenes to the background music. The Runaways Teaser Hits the Web
Danielle Johnsen :: Thursday, December 17th, 2009 11:16 am
The highly anticipated biopic on the all girl rock band who put a strangle hold on the music industry in the late 1970’s has finally hit the web. And if these clips are any indication, Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and the rest of the ladies fully embodied what it takes to be in The Runaways. The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month and hits theaters nationwide in March 2010. Check out the trailer after the jump! MORE »

Must Read: Dear Andy Kaufman, I Hate Your Guts!
Danielle Johnsen :: Monday, December 7th, 2009 3:57 pm
Ever since I received Dear Andy Kaufman, I Hate Your Guts! its been difficult to put the coffee table-style book down. The book is a collection of passionate hate mail, counter offers and hysterical polaroids Kaufman received in response to his “misogynistic” request to the women of America to wrestle. Kaufman, best known for his near riot inciting style of comedy, had loved wrestling since his childhood on Long Island and somehow managed to incorporate the sport into his act. The comedian first wrestled a woman on an episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ in 1979 and after winning the match, Kaufman put out a call to women all over to challenge him. What followed could be described as both one of the greatest comedic bits in a generation and a highly cathartic process for women dealing with the constant battle of sexism.

The Avett Brothers Get Local for New Video
Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 5:32 pm
No this is not a local cable shopping network commercial, its the latest music video from The Avett Brothers. Jody Hill, subversive director of Foot Fist Way and Observe & Report, worked on the latest video in support of the band’s single “Slight Figure Of Speech” and its all kinds of good. To add to the mystery behind the commercials, Hill did a whole slew of them for The American Budget network , which you can view on their YouTube channel. Not sure if this video does a better job of promoting the band or getting fans of Hill and “Eastbound & Down” psyched for its upcoming second season on HBO. Either way, it reminds of the good ol’ days, when music videos were goofy, much like Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” and Foo Fighters’.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” + The Muppets = Instant Smile
Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 4:10 pm
Not sure if this really needs any introduction, but let’s try. The Muppets Studio Channel on YouTube launched today with dozens of great videos, including their cover of Queen’s quintessential hit “Bohemian Rhapsody”. I dare you to watch this video and not giggle from beginning to end. Check out the video after the jump. MORE »

How Do You Become More Than an iPod Commercial?
Danielle Johnsen :: Monday, November 16th, 2009 5:36 pm
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are making it their business to be more than just “that band from the iPod commercials”. The infectious acid pop/dance duo from Denmark, whose single “Around the Bend” was everywhere earlier this year thanks to the Apple commercial complex, just released their first full length,”Fruit”. The band did a few small shows last week here in New York City before setting sail for their headlining tour throughout Europe. MORE »

We’ll Finally Get More Hole
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, November 13th, 2009 4:37 pm
As a forever alterna-teen, news of Courtney Love’s upcoming record is making me way too excited. The co-founder and leader of Hole, as well as twitterer and blogger extraordinaire, will release ‘Nobody’s Daughter’ next January. The album started taking shape a few years back in 2005 when Courtney was doing a court-mandated stint in rehab, originally being produced by Billy Corgan and Linda Perry. Love scrapped the work she had done with Corgan and Perry in 2007 and began working on the album at New York’s famous Electric Lady Studios with producers Marko Larkin and Michael Beinhorn. MORE »

Twitter Account Gets Own Television Series
Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 5:01 pm
Apparently if you want to become the next big thing in publishing or Hollywood, take to the internet. A few months ago it seemed that any sort of pop culture relevant blog, like This is Why You Are Fat and Look at This Fucking Hipster, were securing book deals, so it was only natural that the next step was to give Twitter users their own piece of the pie. @ShitMyDadSays, a Twitter account started in August by Justin Halpern, has not only scored more than 700,000 followers in the few months since its inception - it now has a production deal with CBS. Dear Louis CK, I’m Sorry…
Danielle Johnsen :: Friday, November 6th, 2009 7:03 pm
New York is easily the epicenter of comedy, with hundreds of one liners being delivered to drunk crowds on a nightly basis. And this city becomes a comedy lovers’ wet dream this weekend with the annual New York Comedy Festival. There are over 100 performances this weekend, from the big names like Tracy Morgan, Patton Oswalt and Dane Cook, to small troops from the UCB and PIT theaters taking advantage of the hype and hoping this will be their last small gig. The highlight of the festival will obviously be Louis CK’s performance at Carolines on B’way this Sunday evening. His brash, witty and dark humor are a perfect fit for the times we are in and he has an awkward ease that works both during his live stand up and his time on screen. The epitome of a New York comic, CK manages to bring light and humor to some of the most gnarly topics, like divorce, unemployment and even kidnapping. This is why I owe the comic an apology. MORE »

Christopher Walken Does ‘Poker Face’
Danielle Johnsen :: Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 3:05 pm
Is there anyone else quite like Christopher Walken? Beyond just being a talented actor, the man lives for music and comedy. Walken has brought his signature style to various music videos over the years and he is the reason I can’t not think of cow bell whenever I hear ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’, but his latest effort has had me hypnotized for days. Har Mar Superstar Brings the Glitter to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Danielle Johnsen :: Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 11:55 am
While for most of us 2009 might seem to be a blight on the human condition, I’m fairly certain Sean Tillman sees this year differently. With a supporting role in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It, the successful web series Crappy Holidays, music videos starring Eva Mendes in support of his recently dropped album Dark Touches and a freshly inked production deal with HBO, Tillman is leaving his mark on all areas of entertainment.
Tillman introduced the magic that is Har Mar Superstar to America last night, well at least the ones up past 12AM. He performed his first single “Tall Boy” from his recently dropped album Dark Touches on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, draped in an African caftan and gold lame gloves. MORE »
