Paul, The Psychic Octopus Predicts German Victory Over England

Pretty much every country on earth (except the U.S.) has intricate rituals dedicated to cheering on their soccer (or football) teams. They have ornate chants, costumes and are willing to die for their teams-or at least get pass-out drunk for them. The Germans have their own rituals, which apparently involve a psychic cephalopod named Paul. See a video of Paul’s prediction techniques after the jump.

Apparently the two-year-old octopus has been predicting soccer games for years and has an astonishing record. He correctly predicted 70% of Germany’s matches in the 2008 European Championship and all of Germany’s results in this year’s World Cup.

How, you may ask, does he do it? Simple: an aquarium worker lowers a little apparatus that is fixed with two, clear boxes that each contain a mussel. Then he gets to work doing what animals do best: eating. His predictions are based on which box he opens, and aquarium spokesman Tanja Munzig had this to say of his latest prediction: “He swam straight over to the German glass, climbed in and even put a lid on top once he was sitting inside.”

After correctly predicting Germany’s win over Australia in their opening match, their loss to Serbia, and their victory over Ghana he has become the hottest celebrity in Germany. Below is a video of his amazing Nostradamus-like prediction techniques.
