Beach House Release Third Album

Amelia Kreminski :: Friday, October 30th, 2009 4:15 pm

Winter weather got you down? Escape to a tropical paradise with Baltimore pop-rockers Beach House. The band first broke into the indie scene in 2006 when Pitchfork named their debut album the sixteenth best release of the year. Their third LP, Teen Dream, will be released on Sub Pop on January 26, 2010. You can listen to it, but you’ll have to log in to your Sub Pop account.

Haven’t heard of Beach House? Check them out! Many have called them “dream pop” and compared the vocals of lead singer Victoria Legrand to Nico’s. And in my opinion, the world can never have enough Nicos.

EELS Release (Another) New Record

Amelia Kreminski :: Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 11:52 am

Their last album, Hombre Lobo, came out on June 2, 2009, but that hasn’t stopped indie grunge rockers EELS from churning out more tunes. January 19 2010 marks the release date of their eighth studio album, entitled End Times. Sounds a little dark, but that melancholic, angst-rocker sound is kind of their thing. And Mark Oliver Everett’s impressive beard does make him look kind of like a prophet… It kind of makes you wonder-what were they doing during that four-year hiatus between Blinking Lights and Other Revelations and Hombre Lobo? Talking with aliens? Visiting Mayan tombs? Maybe they know something we don’t…

Slumberland Records Hosts Celebratory Shows

Amelia Kreminski :: Friday, October 2nd, 2009 4:39 pm

Slumberland Records is turning twenty, and to celebrate, they’re throwing you a party! Maybe not you, specifically-but you should definitely go. A series of shows in New York City and D.C. will feature the label’s best new sounds like Crystal Stilts, Pants Yell! and Brown Recluse, and many of their older classics like The Ropers, Nord Express and Lorelei will join in for special reunion shows.

If you’re not familiar with these Slumberland bands, they generally fall under the shoegaze-y, indie pop and rock genres. Early 2010 will also see some re-issues of albums from The Ropers, Black Tambourine and Henry’s Dress. Good times will be had by all, and chances are, these shows will beat your twentieth birthday party. Check out the dates posted so far after the jump. MORE »

Tiny Vipers “Workin’ Woman”

Amelia Kreminski :: Thursday, September 10th, 2009 6:16 pm

Jesy Fortino used to be a big asshole. It’s a surprising truth—puzzling, even, when one considers her gentle stage presence as Seattle-grown singer-songwriter Tiny Vipers, her resonating, dark chocolate voice, and her melodious acoustic plucks. She may confuse fans with her general placidness and waifish modesty in public, but do not be fooled—Jesy Fortino is much more than just another sensitive folk singer with an acoustic guitar and a pure heart. Hers is an expansive tale, filled with intrigue, Dungeons and Dragons, shit-faced yuppies, and, yes, a dark past as a self-confessed asshole. But that’s why we love her: because, let’s face it—we’ve all been there too. MORE »
