Friday, July 24, 2009Best CD We Got In The Mail Today

OK so maybe we didn't get this CD in the mail today today. Sometimes the office monster eats 'em up and sometimes, as was the case with this one, it just takes a while to get to. Friends, which was released on June 23rd, is moody at times, but always melodic. It's a perfect score for these humid summer nights. If Luke Top's name doesn't ring a bell Fool's Gold (his band) probably does. He has also collaborated with Foreign Born and Cass McCombs (both featured guests on Friends ...maybe the album's title refers to them). "Plainest Drought" and album closer "Firestorm" are personal highlights. But don't trust me. Stream some songs here and decide for yourself! Also, look for Fool's Gold's debut on September 29th. -IL

Thursday, July 23, 2009Last Weekend: Coney Island Baby

We had so much fun at our rooftop party @ Siren Fest with Colt 45 last weekend that we've been taking it easy all week and just now getting around to posting about it.

As you can see it was a perfect day, with plenty of beer and bbq, on the best rooftop in Coney. For more pics from the day, click here. If you missed it this year, be sure to keep an eye out for the party next year -- the whole roof will be astro-turfed and filled with inflatable beach furniture.

Thanks to Colt 45 and Cha Cha's for a great time. We'll see you next summer!-AM

Tuesday, July 21, 2009Dent May plays Mariachi in a Mexican Restaurant

Dent May and his Magnificent Ukelele brought his strumming and his crooning into a local Mexican taqueria to bust a move Mariachi-style. Sure, it seems like this video was maybe conceived by some marketing folks trying to make something viral for the band, and sure it would have been funnier if they had dressed up like traditional Mariachis -- but you know what, it's pretty goddam funny, especially the waiter who has to butt through them to get clock into work. We say, Well played, May -- viral away... -AM

Monday, July 20, 2009The Clientele at Williamsburg Hall of Music

Last night, London's The Clientele performed at the Williamsburg Hall of Music. The set list began with "Nighttime" by Big Star and continued with songs that span their entire career that began in 1991--nine years before their official first release Suburban Light.

If you're unfamiliar with their unique brand of pop, their tempo of choice typically lingers somewhere between slow and very slow. Think Nick Drake. Live, however, the band turned it up a notch and (pardon the expression) ...rocked out (especially on an extended rendition of "Sketch" off the forthcoming Bonfires On The Heath). Singer Alasdair Maclean also effectively entertained the audience with self-deprecating quips while he tuned his guitar. Highlights included "Jennifer & Julia" and "Harvest Time" also off Bonfires On The Heath, which will be October 6th via Merge. -IL
