David Byrne to play Dark Was The Night Concert

David Byrne has hopped onto the lineup at the Dark Was The Night Concert at Radio City Music Hall in NYC on May 3. Also performing are Bon Iver, Dave Sitek, Dirty Projectors, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, The National and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.

David Byrne will be performing his song from the Dark Was The Night compilation "Knotty Pine," which we're guessing he'll perform along with Dirty Projectors. This tag team might possibly win "song of the year" so far for 2009 if D+T had to vote right now.

Dark Was The Night is a charity compilation whose proceeds go to benefit Red Hot Organization, a non-profit dedicated to fighting AIDS/HIV through popular culture. So go pick one up.-AM

Best CD We Got In The Mail Today

Even though our offices are separated by a partition, I can still hear the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record pumping from our publisher's laptop. Boy is he enthused. And boy how I don't blame him. It's Blitz is great. I listened to it on the train this morning. Most of you should have it by now -- those of you that don't are missing out. Synth heavy goodness. Go get it. PS. How many times do you think Karen O. had to squeeze an egg in hand in order to get the album cover photo? -IL

Wednesday, April 1, 2009APRIL FOOLS, Everyone had by BJORK

Check this out from Bjork's website:

Bjork
has accepted the position of lead vocalist for legendary Led Zeppelin, but it was evident that their world tour was in turmoil after original singer Robert Plant decided to concentrate on live work with Allison Krauss. They have been looking for new singer to tour and record with as reported in the media.

Bjork has though put forward her wish that they only cover with her songs from album I and IV, among them pure classics like:

"Good Times Bad Times", "You Shook Me", "Dazed and Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", "Communication Breakdown", "I Can't Quit You Baby", "Black Dog" , "Rock and Roll", "The Battle of Evermore" and "Stairway to Heaven".

The tour kicks off in June after Bjork has fulfilled her other engagements. For further details of the tour and tickets are here.

Tuesday, March 31, 2009Live Review: Akron/ Family

Last weekend D+T made a staff field trip to Union Pool to see Akron/ Family. We all ended up getting unnecessarily drunk and taking some historic photo-booth pictures, but that's a whole other story. Akron/ Family's new record Set Em Wild, Set Em Free, out May 5 on Dead Oceans, has quickly become a new favorite in our office, and the material really came to life. It was an impressive show with the usual Akron wild cards like a five-minute simultaneous dueling saxophone solo, but most impressive was the mastery they've developed over their musical mechanics. At turns whisper soft and explosive, they really took advantage of the intimacy of the space to create an incredibly dynamic set. And it seems to be working out for them -- people at the show were freaking out. Akron/ Family will be back in New York on May 6, playing the Bowery Ballroom. No west coast dates announced as of yet.

PS -- we meant to get this up earlier, but we were too busy closing our new issue with Danny McBride on the cover, which incidentally also has a great feature with Akron/ Family. Look out for it in late April.-AM

Chris Kattan: Don't Call It a Comeback

The circle of Slumdog Millionaire cross-cultural life is complete. In a case of life imitating art imitating life, Chris Kattan is set to star in a comedy miniseries or IFC called Bollywood Hero, in which he plays none other than Chris Kattan, a washed-up Hollywood actor, who, pissed that he can't get good work in Tinsletown anymore, heads off for the greener pastures of India, to try to make it as a Bollywood movie star.

The best part: the show is actually shooting in Bollywood - which means Kattan has spent the last months trying to become an American star in India, just like that guy he plays in the show - you know, Chris Kattan. This sounds amazing. Unfortunately we all have to wait until August 6 to watch.-AM
