Friday, March 20, 2009M.I.A. to Play Coachella 2009

Just announced: M.I.A. will pull off a Coachella hat trick, performing at the Indio, CA fest for the third time in 2009. So much for maternity leave.

Between her 9-month smackdown at the Grammys and next month's Coachella performance, is it fair to start calling M.I.A. the "hardest working woman in show business?" Sure, what the hell -- Karen O. probably won't be making a run at the title anytime soon, although she will also be performing at Coachella with Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Also playing: Paul McCartney, The Killers, The Cure, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, My Bloody Valentine, Leonard Cohen, Conor Oberst, Devendra Banhart. For the full lineup and more details click here.-AM

Author Millard Kaufman Died

Author Millard Kaufman, co-creator of Mr. Magoo, passed away due to complications from heart surgery on Saturday. McSweeney's published Bowl Of Cherries, a novel he wrote at the age of ninety, a couple years ago. This is what he said about potential readers of his book, "If they don't like it, they can go fuck themselves." Well Mr. Kaufman, I, for one, really enjoyed it. R.I.P. For more on Millard Kaufman, buy his book here and read a great Q&A here. -IL

Wednesday, March 18, 2009Uniqlo Collabs launch tomorrow

Uniqlo is rolling out collaborations with Steven Alan (for womenswear) and Opening Ceremony (for menswear) starting tomorrow, March 19 at the Soho store in NYC.

Let's face it, you'll probably stop shopping at Uniqlo altogether once the new Topshop opens down the road on April 2nd, and unless this recession turns around a lot faster than pretty much everyone thinks it will, chances are you'll be laying off the actual Steven Alan and Opening Ceremony stores for a while longer. Might as well take advantage of this opportunity to pick up some Opening Ceremony and Steven Alan designs on the cheap. But get there early -- last time H&M pulled this kind of shenanigans with Comme Des Garcons their shelves were overrun like the Storming of the Bastille.-AM

Ads Featuring Stephin Merritt

The latest brand to license a Magnetic Fields song is Puma. Britta Phillips from Dean & Britta lends her vocals to the song that originally appeared on 69 Love Songs (1999). Peep the ad below and click to watch Mr. Merritt's contributions to Volvo here and here. In 2003 Southern Comfort used the song "Strange Powers" in a television spot, but I can't find a link for it anywhere. Sorry! -IL

Tuesday, March 17, 2009Suicide?

About 20 million people in the United States of America suffer from depression, anxiety or both. That's a lot!

As a result suicides outnumber homicides about 2-1 in the U.S. each year. But depression and anxiety are hardly the only causes of suicide. People kill themselves because of health, occupational pressure, physical pain, existential blight, financial ruin, and even tinnitus.

Now, and I'm not completely certain mind you, but I think the percentage of people who commit suicide because they've received millions of dollars in cash bonuses from their company is zero. If not, than it has to be pretty close to it, perhaps .01 %. Maybe less.

Why Iowa senator Charles Grassley (R) suggested the beneficiaries of AIG's 2008 contracted bonus structure ought to commit suicide is anyone's guess. Although he sort of retracted his statement, he did manage to tap into the public's discontent, a bizarre position for a Republican to find himself in.

In the long run, it's possible the AIG beneficiaries will return or not accept the money, but I wouldn't delude myself into thinking it was a decision guided by morality. After all, if you were similarly propositioned (I want you to work on a project, if it succeeds or fails miserably you'll be paid an enormous sum of money) what would you do? -SB

Things the Grandchildren Should Know

Homber Lobo is the name of the new EELS record. It comes out June 2. I've always been a fan and am looking forward to hearing it. Last night, I decided to start reading a book instead of going directly to sleep. I picked up Things The Grandchildren Should Know, Mark Oliver Everett's autobiography and didn't put it down until 5 am once I had turned the last page. Everett (aka E) has led a remarkable life filled with great tragedy and success. The book is honest and to the point. I recommend it and am now going to drink another cup of coffee. -IL

Return of The Frog King

Jeremy Enigk, the depressed, bald Christian who fronted Sunny Day Real Estate (the last emo band?) is releasing a new record on May 12th. It's called OK Bear.

Sunny Day Real Estate released two incredible record in the nineties, 94's Diary and 95's LP2. Though I'm committed to those records, everything else Enigk has been a part of since has been pretty terrible, save the song "One" off of 2000's The Rising Tide.

Jeremy's posted a song off the album, "Mind Idea," for your listening pleasure. You can listen to it over at Pitchfork. -SB

The Wireless Life

The NY Times is hosting a great collection of illustrations today by award-winning artist and illustrator Christoph Niemann called, "My Life With Cables."

Everyone hates cables -- I challenge you to look at these illustrations without getting anxiety about that mess of gnarled crap behind your TV, computer, or what-have-you.

Here's my idea: some of the money in the Obama stimulus package going towards an energy overhaul should go to eradicating cables once and for all. Picture it: an all-wireless world. We'd save environmentally on all that copper and rubber casing currently junking up our homes and offices. And the best part: we'd finally jettison all the psychic angst those knotted tangles cause us.

Ok, maybe we're a long way from an all-wireless future. In the meantime, VTech is trying to bring us into that future, one small step at a time. Their new IS9181 internet radio device is a completely wireless, self-contained internet radio streamer that can connect to pretty much anything you own. A flying DeLorean it is not -- but I'll settle for a future without wires. -AM

Stop the AIG Bonuses

As you've all probably heard, this $165 million that AIG is trying to give out in bonuses to its executives is a serious pain in our president's ass. Sign this MoveOn petition demanding that the Obama Administration and Congress do everything in their power to prevent AIG from handing out these bonuses.

It's a pain in our ass, too--the amount given to AIG in bailout money already equals $500 for every American. I, for one, don't buy the argument that AIG is legally obligated to give out these bonuses. Last time I checked, bonus money is a reward that comes out of excess profit. If there's no profit, there's no bonus money. The taxpayer money given to AIG to keep the world from ending should not be counted as regular income for the company. It is dunce money--water we were forced to throw at these fools to keep them from burning our whole house down.

Not only should they not get to dole out bonuses from taxpayer money, they shouldn't even be allowed to decide how to use it for real capital expenses. As Barney Frank said this morning, we should be firing these guys, not bonusing them. Getting fired is what happens when you mess up, right? Especially when your mess-up is so huge that it threatens to sink not only your company, but the entire global economy? Sign the petition here:

MacGyver Movie Announced

Dino and Raffaella De Laurentiis are bringing MacGyver to the big screen. As reports The Hollywood Reporter, "No writer is attached, but the studio hopes to find a script that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie." I really hope this means plans for a MacGruber movie have also been set in motion. -IL
