The Donnie Darko sequel is going straight to DVD. Thank god. Somethings don't need to exist -- like this for example. -IL

Andrew Bird Sale

Andrew Bird's Noble Beast is on sale at Amazon for $1.99. There's not much else you can buy for so little. No. Wait. Nowadays you can pretty much buy anything you want for that amount. Still, a new Andrew Bird album for just under two bucks is a steal of a deal! -IL

Movies Opening Up Today

Here's a list of movies hitting theaters today: The Pink Panther 2, Push, He's Just Not That Into You, Fanboys and Coraline. Are we excited for any? I happen to think Steve Martin's invented French accent is pretty funny, but maybe that's something everyone is just not that into. -IL

Thursday, February 5, 2009Best CD We Got In The Mail Today

The best CD we got in the mail today comes from a duo called N.A.S.A. If you're not hip to these guys, you will be very very soon. N.A.S.A. stands for North America South America. It's the union of U.S.'s DJ Squeak E. Clean and Brazil's DJ Zegon. The album features guest performances from Lykke Li, Karen O., David Byrne, Tom Waits, Santogold, M.I.A., KRS-One, Rizza, Kanye West -- the list really goes on. Though the appearance of these indie/rock/hip hop mainstays are terrific, it's the duo's production that makes The Spirit Of Apollo truly remarkable. The album will be released on April February 17th courtesy of -Anti. -IL

Wednesday, February 4, 2009Tokyo!

Like New York Stories, Paris Je T'aime and its recently completed sequel New York I Love You, Tokyo is the latest film to ask, "Do we shape cities, or do the cities shape us?" The heavy hitters behind this one are Michel Gondry, Leos Carax, and Bong Joon-ho. Watch the trailer here. The film will be released on March 6. -IL

Langerado Canceled

Miami's Langerado festival has been canceled this year as a result of poor ticket sales. Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Ryan Adams, Snoop Dogg, Deerhunter, Thievery Corporation were all set to play, but will now have to find something else to do. A Langerado rep blamed today's "difficult economic times." That being true, another viable reason could be Miami's lack of hippies. Yuck. Yuck. -IL

Michael Cera, Nomad.

Here is the trailer for Michael Cera's latest film, Year One. Though it looks like he's still milking the same awkward delivery, I feel pretty good about this one. In other Cera-related news, the Arrested Development movie seems to be back on and Nick & Norah's Infinite Play List is out on DVD today. -IL

Christian Bale Loses It, Mae Shi Write Song About It

By now most of you have heard the audio file of Christian Bale yelling at Terminator's director of photography. If you haven't, you can stream it here. It gets ugly, but not as ugly as the time Alec Baldwin went ape shit on his daughter. Anyway, Los Angeles' The Mae Shi wrote a song inspired by Bale's outburst. It's pretty great. Check it out below. -IL

Monday, February 2, 2009Ray-Ban Gets Rad

Ray-Ban ended up shading the eyes of almost as many indie-rock fans in 2008 as there were faces to accommodate them. You get that kind of love by understanding your audience. And someone over at Ray-Ban apparently knows what they're doing, because the theme for their new art work is--you guessed it--psychedelic. They've tapped German art director/ designer/ wunderkind Sebastian Onufszak to create artwork for the new campaign (showcasing Clubmaster shades). And he got it just right--without the logos these could have been album art for the new Animal Collective record or a concert poster for MGMT.

Who new comedian Steve Martin played the banjo? Apparently, he's pretty proficient -- enough at least to make a record's worth of tunes composed on the instrument. Listen and read more here. -IL

Another Reason why Google is So Cool

Fellow Google Earth enthusiasts, rejoice! Google Earth 5 came out today, and the latest version gives you still more reason to stay inside in front of the computer screen touring the world instead of actually going outside to tour the real world! Maybe everyone in the world isn't as excited about Google Earth as I am, but come on - the hidden flight simulator (press Control+Alt+A, Control+A, or Command+Option+A) is pretty cool, and what comes next is even cooler. It's called Historical Imagery, and basically it is the closest thing to a time machine anyone has invented so far. It means that you can click on a clock in the menu and literally watch urban sprawl and the wrath of humanity spread its way across the globe right before your eyes. Ah, modern civilization. Besides that potentially disturbing feature, Google Earth 5 also includes the exciting addition of the world's oceans! So if watching suburbia blossom before your eyes gets you down, take a little (virtual) vacation to the briny depths! - AK

Is it Art? Uh... You Decide.

Modern artist Tehching Hsieh is a committed guy. Best known for his five One Year Performances (that all took one year to complete), the Taiwanese-American artist currently residing in Brooklyn will be featured at the MoMA until May 18. So what are the One Year Performances? Well, there was the one where he spent a year inside a cage, the one where he punched a time clock every hour (no more than an hour's sleep at a time for an entire year? Recipe for insanity?), the one that he spent completely outdoors, the one that he spent tied to fellow artist Linda Montano (no, they did not touch...for the ENTIRE YEAR), and the one where he didn't see, talk about, or read about art - but he created it? Can we call this art? I don't know. Go to the MoMA and see for yourself, but whether your view is positive or negative, one thing can't be denied - Hsieh understands commitment to his art. -AK

Horrific Film News

Hollywood has officially run out of ideas. Evidently, a remake of Bonnie & Clyde is in the works. The Story of Bonnie and Clyde is what they're calling it. Hilary Duff is set to play Bonnie Parker. This is worse than the time Cameron Crowe vomited all over Habre Los Ojos his his remake, Vanilla Sky -- or when they digitally replaced the guns in E.T. with walkie-talkies. Who okayed this. Curses. -IL

Al Pacino's Panic

If Rachel Getting Married didn't quench your thirst for depressing documentary-style films about drug addicts, check out this golden oldie! Directed by Jerry Schatzberg, photographer of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde cover, and starring Al Pacino and Kitty Winn as two young addicts hanging out in New York's Sherman Square in the early seventies, Panic in Needle Park was one of the first realistic portraits of drug-torn lives ever made. The move doesn't even have any music to distract from the horror of the two young lovers' unwinding lives. A winner at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, this dark feature will be shown at Film Forum in New York until Feb. 5. -AK

2009 Superbowl Commercials Round-Up

This one is for Cash 4 Gold, which couldn't be any more depressing. It stars MC Hammer and Ed McMahon. How the mighty have fallen.

Up next is Cars.com, I really hope Wes Anderson didn't direct this.

And one from Careerbuilder.com that proves repetition isn't necessarily funny -- just annoying.

Coke's commercials are typically great. This one from Coke Zero, unfortunately, fell flat.

Pedigree's features an elderly lady chasing an ostrich. Yay?

Last but not least is the one from Doritos. The zinger comes at the last second. Wait for it -- it's mildly rewarding. -IL
