Thursday, January 29, 2009Best CD We Got In The Mail Today

Beirut's March Of The Zapotec is the best CD we got in the mail today. But that doesn't mean it is amazing. The disc is a collection of two EP's. The first, March Of The Zapotec, is without a doubt the weaker of the two. The songs are what you'd expect from Condon, only lacking the immediacy of his previous releases. My friend mocked it saying, Congratulations, you found a horn. Which is a bit harsh, but I don't necessarily disagree. Realpeople Holland, the second disc, is worth it's weight in gold. Don't be surprised if you hear, "My Night with the Prostitute From Marseille" or, "No Dice," at the next gay disco you find yourself in. For the most part, horns were swapped for synthesizers. But instrumentation aside, the songs are simply better.

Condon & friends have three shows coming up in Brooklyn before heading off over seas.

Feb 4, at Music Hall of Williamsburg
Feb 6 and 7, at Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Track listing after the jump. - IL

March of the Zapotec Track List

March of the Zapotec:
1. "El Zocalo"
2. "La Llorna"
3. "My Wife"
4. "The Akara"
5. "On a Bayonet"
6. "The Shrew"

RealPeople Holland:
7. "My Night with the Prostitute from Marseille"
8. "My Wife, Lost in the Wild"
9. "Venice"
10. "The Concubine"
11. "No Dice"

Shanon's Bottle of Whisky: Space Ghost!

I don't know about you guys but I love Space Ghost. LOVE! This clip's kind of long but totally worth it because Thom Yorke is randomly in there and Bjork plays Space Ghost's wifie. Hilarious! I also appreciate it when Space Ghost says he'll put anything given to him in his mouth because I'm pretty much the same way. I ate pizza at 2am last night then had a bagel, 3 cups of coffee, a banana AND an Odwalla Superfood smoothie for breakfast. So yeah, I'm a champion. Now watch this video.

Kylesa and Tombs Playing the Charleston TONIGHT

I don't know much about hardcore, but you know what I love about it? How excited dudes get over it. Adorable! It's like how girls (myself included) go giddy for Paul Rudd. Tonight at the Charleston in Williamsburg I expect to see lots of bros all glassy-eyed and love-struck, because "crusty psych" legends Kylesa, Tombs, Tournament and Black Anvil are all playing. The boys of Chronic Youth put the show together and are DJing along with Blood Bath and Beyond. If you miss this show you're stupid because they're playing the tiniest venue ever. Hardcore's meant to be seen in dirty basement's anyway, right? Also any event that crams tons of geeked-out, tattooed, long-haired boys into one room is my kind of event! -SK

Here it is in beautiful black and white, courtesy of Stereogum. I'm pretty sure Kevin Smith made a video for Alanis Morissette that had a similar look -- only I can't find it on YouTube for proof. Either way, this one is better. -IL

Netflix To America: "Recession What?"

More often than not I wake up incredibly early but still manage to get to work late because I sit around the house reading NYTimes.com or watching CNN. Sometimes I even just stare into space for an hour or so. This morning I learned something interesting on CNN though - Netflix's profits are up a whopping 45%. That's huge! It just goes to show that there are still companies out there that can provide premium service and still turn a profit. For just $4.99 a month (Netflix's lowest membership fee), you can get one video at a time with limitless "watch instantly" movies. And now that they're even available straight to your TV or through you Xbox, well, we predict they'll weather this recession. Let's face it, who wouldn't rather subscribe to Netflix when the cost of going out to the movies is $12.00 - and that's only if you go solo and dont buy snacks! Other companies should follow their example! -SK

Monday, January 26, 2009The Wheel Of Suck: Year Of The Ox

We have a section in every issue of D+T called "The Wheel Of Suck," which charts out world events on a metric of how sucky or not-sucky they were. We all feel the section was a little funnier (and maybe more appropriate) before the world dove headlong into a global bum-out, but we're keeping the section because what the hell--we were here first.

Now it appears the Chinese are throwing down their own Wheel Of Suck. As you might know, it's the Chinese New Year. 2009 is the Year Of The Ox. And according to Chinese astrology, it is going to suck. I actually heard a guy on NPR today saying President Obama is going to have a very bad year, because the Year of the Ox is going to suck.

Now, you don't exactly have to be Franz Kafka to be imagining a dark future at this point, so I can see where this stuff is coming from. But I also think they might be on to something. 2008 was the year of the Rat. And you know what? We had Blagojevich, Bernie Madoff, Eliot, Spitzer, (hell, throw Patterson in there, too) we had that dude who cheated on Christy Brinkley, we had the Patriots cheating on their video surveillance, and we had the next Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, cheating on his taxes. Hell, I think Obama was the only 100% solid guy around all year.

But here's the good news: 2008 was the yer of the Rat (boooo!), 2009 is the year of the Ox (sounds like a pain in the ass), but 2010 is the year of the Tiger (yesssss!)! Get the eye of the tiger and the thrill of the fight, folks, because 2010 is going to be the most ass-kicking, whopper of a year you've ever seen. Seriously, 1,335,962,132 Chinese people can't all be wrong.
